A profound rosé of high gastronomy, nothing like the light and fleeting versions one so often encounters.
The Bandol Rosé 2023 from Château de Pibarnon is one of the most admired and most anticipated rosés in the French vineyard, a rosé unlike any other, which bears within it all the singularity of an extraordinary terroir and the vision of a family whose commitment since 1978 has placed Pibarnon among the emblematic properties of Bandol. The ageing potential and structure do not rob it of the freshness one expects from a rosé. The full and savoury palate bears no resemblance whatsoever to the stereotypes of rosés. A rosé for all seasons, capable of ageing and surprising.

The terroir and vineyards

Overlooking the Mediterranean and rolling over hills studded with olive trees, cypresses, mulberries, oleanders, pines and green oaks, the vineyard of Pibarnon is truly dazzling, situated among the highest slopes of the Bandol terroir. Perched at 300 metres altitude above the Mediterranean, the Château de Pibarnon reigns over the Bandol appellation with majesty. This family domaine benefits from a rare Triassic limestone terroir, optimal sunshine and a microclimate tempered by the sea. Its subsoil of blue marls is a particularity that confers upon its wines power and elegance. The noble grape here is Mourvèdre. The 2023 rosé blend is composed of 65 percent Mourvèdre and 35 percent Cinsault. Vinification is carried out with great precision: the Cinsault is pressed directly, it is this that brings brilliance and crisp fruit. The Mourvèdre comes from direct bleeding and pressing. Mourvèdre dominates the blend and brings the spicy complexity that distinguishes Pibarnon rosés from others: red berries, herbaceous notes, fine tannin structure. The Cinsault completes with freshness and elegance.

The 2023 vintage

The 2023 rosé comes from a relatively dry year, but it expresses this in a very positive way, through density, energy and contained power. It is an avalanche of red fruits, some spices, a little characteristic liquorice, and a fleshy and pulpy amplitude that triggers an explosion of sensations. By summer, it will gain in flesh and salty length, enhanced by some elegant subtle bitterness.

Tasting profile

The colour is pale rosé, almost salmon, with subtle golden highlights, brilliant and limpid. The nose is complex with red berries, strawberry and raspberry, white flowers, citrus, discreet herbaceous notes and mineral nuances. On the palate, the wine is powerful and structured, with vivid freshness, savoury fruit, fine minerality and remarkable length. The characteristic salinity of Pibarnon extends the finish with a natural elegance that recalls the proximity of the Mediterranean. A rosé that distinguishes itself absolutely from the light and fleeting versions so often associated with Provence, here the complexity and depth of Mourvèdre imposes its personality with a nobility and persistence that make it a great table wine in its own right.

The domaine

Henri de Saint-Victor created Château de Pibarnon in 1978, establishing it within a few decades among the emblematic properties of Bandol. Since 2000, his son Éric de Saint-Victor has led the domaine, and continues to refine the expression of his wines from the limestone terroirs of Cadière d'Azur. Respect for viticultural traditions, hand-harvested grapes, precise vinification and ageing in oak foudres confer upon the cuvées of Pibarnon a strong identity, both faithful to the typicity of Bandol and resolutely elegant.

Food pairing

This Bandol Rosé accompanies Mediterranean cuisine, colourful, inventive, with gentle and rare spices. It will pair magnificently with Provençal bouillabaisse, wild sea bass grilled with garrigue herbs, red mullet with tapenade, lamb daube with olives, baked Nicoise ratatouille or a platter of Provençal cheeses such as Banon or Pélardon. Served between 10 and 12 °C, it will reveal all the complexity, depth and salty minerality of an exceptional Bandol rosé.
