A rare cuvée of intense minerality from Domaine Thomas Morey, La Truffière reveals one of Puligny-Montrachet's most singular terroirs.
The Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Truffière 2023 from Domaine Thomas Morey is one of the most singular and enchanting bottles of the Côte de Beaune, a Premier Cru of barely 2.5 hectares, one of the smallest in the entire Puligny-Montrachet appellation, whose name alone is an invitation to mystery and reverie. Highly perfumed from its youth, it combines the crystalline purity of Chardonnay with the mineral richness of an exceptional terroir whose history's roots run deep before the vine took precedence over the truffle.

The terroir of La Truffière

La Truffière takes its name from the Burgundy truffle, the Tuber uncinatum, black on the outside, chocolate brown veined with white inside, whose subtle and enchanting perfume adorned the tables of the Kings of France until the reign of Francis I, who then preferred the Périgord truffle. Before vine cultivation took hold on this hillside of the hamlet of Blagny, on the border between Puligny-Montrachet and Meursault, this parcel was covered with truffle beds. Even today, although they are no longer exploited, the ancient truffières slumber beneath the vines, perhaps conferring on the soil this particular complexity and aromatic depth. The site, in gentle slope, is planted on poor and shallow soils, a red earth scattered with numerous small stones that release the heat accumulated during the day in the course of Burgundy's cool nights, thus favouring slow, harmonious and particularly complex ripening of the grapes. Facing east and south-east, this altitude terroir confers natural tension and freshness that allow the wines to traverse the years with rare grace. Domaine Thomas Morey works two parcels planted respectively in 1952 and 1986.

Tasting profile

The colour is pale gold with green hints, luminous and of perfect clarity. The nose is immediately highly perfumed, of striking fineness and complexity: floral aromas of hawthorn and acacia mingle with notes of white peach, pear, citrus, fresh almond and flint. A slight touch of noble petrol and flint evokes great age-worthy Chardonnays, while a hint of toasted hazelnut testifies to precise and measured oak ageing. On the palate, the wine is lively, tense and of absolute purity: a chiselled acidity structures rich and silky material, with a mineral grain of remarkable precision. The balance between the richness of the terroir and the natural freshness of the vintage is stunning, and the long, persistent and mineral finish extends over notes of bitters delicately integrated. A great white Burgundy wine, to be kept for eight to fifteen years.

The domaine

Thomas Morey represents the tenth generation of a family of vignerons established in Chassagne-Montrachet since 1643. He founded his own domaine in 2006 with his wife Sylvie, on 13 hectares certified in organic farming since 2017. His style is distinguished by a deliberate search for lightness, tension and absolute terroir definition, inspired by great names such as Jean-Marc Roulot. The Chardonnays ferment with indigenous yeasts and are aged on very fine lees in 228 and 350 litre barrels, with only 20 per cent new oak, without excessive stirring, then rest in tank before bottling after 16 to 18 months of ageing. Sulphur is used to a strict minimum, never during fermentation. A philosophy that gives terroir every opportunity to express itself in all its purity. Notably, the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti entrusted Thomas Morey with the care of maintaining its vines in the legendary Montrachet Grand Cru, a rare consecration that testifies to the viticultural excellence of this domaine.

Food pairing

This Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru La Truffière will pair with rare elegance with grilled Breton lobster in tarragon butter, pan-fried scallops with black truffle, wild turbot au naturel, braised sweetbreads with morels and cream, or Bresse chicken in champagne sauce. It will also be magnificent with a characterful soft paste cheese such as truffle-infused Brillat-Savarin or well-aged Époisses. Served between 12 and 14 °C, in fine white Burgundy glasses, it will reveal all the richness, purity and tension of a terroir unique in the world.
