Red and black fruit, spice and the mineral edge of Monthélie. This precise Premier Cru from Domaine Rémi Jobard shows supple, elegant tannins and a textured, lively structure.
The Monthélie 1er Cru Les Vignes Rondes 2024 from Domaine Rémi Jobard is a defined and textured Pinot Noir, showing how finely Monthélie can express itself in the hands of a master. Drawn from a relatively cool Premier Cru, it combines precise fruit, floral notes and an impressive structure, balancing power and finesse, with a somewhat wilder fruit character and a firm mineral backbone.
Terroir and vineyards
Les Vignes Rondes is a Premier Cru of just 2.72 hectares, shared between two domaines. It sits on the plateau east of the village of Monthélie, just west of Volnay, on a cool slope with limestone soils. The Pinot Noir vines, around fifty years old and densely planted, yield concentrated fruit. The domaine has been certified organic since 2008 and has used no fertilisers since 1994. Cordon training naturally limits yields, while grass cover and tilling encourage roots to dig deep. The grapes are hand-harvested, with 80% whole clusters. Fermentation is spontaneous, with indigenous yeasts and gentle extraction. The wine is aged for twelve months in large casks and demi-muids from the Austrian cooperage Stockinger, with about 25% new wood so that the oak remains a subtle presence. It is bottled unfiltered.
Tasting profile
The colour is an intense cherry red with garnet highlights. The nose is voluptuous, combining violet and rose petals with black fruit, black cherry, sour cherry and plum, along with thyme, heather and spice. On the palate the wine is juicy and crisp, with a lacy texture, firm and gripping, offering sensual sweet cherry fruit, fleshy, elegant and silky tannins, and lovely freshness. The long, vibrant finish is marked by fresh earth and tobacco.
The domaine
Winegrowers from father to son since the sixteenth century, the Jobard family farms nine hectares in Meursault, all certified organic, and was taken over by Rémi in 1992. Rémi Jobard seeks above all aromatic purity: the pressing is long, and he is the only producer in Burgundy who works mainly with Stockinger foudres. He explains that everything he does in the vineyard and the cellar aims to keep the terroir transparent and wholly unobscured.
Food and wine pairings
This Monthélie Premier Cru pairs with crisp roast goose, venison steak with caramelised onions, veal, poultry, white meats, game or hard cheese. Served at around 16 °C, after thirty minutes of aeration, it is delicious now, though it will also keep for many years.
