Ripe white fruits, hazelnut and a subtle buttered note. Rich and mineral with beautiful tension, clean and persistent finish.
The Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Macherelles 2023 from Domaine Thomas Morey is one of the most mineral, most linear and most precise expressions in the domaine's white range, a Chardonnay of absolute aromatic clarity, rated 91 to 93 points by Jasper Morris MW, which reveals on this singular terroir in northern Chassagne a personality of remarkable frankness and tension.
The terroir of Les Macherelles
Les Macherelles is a premier cru situated on the northern slope of the Chassagne-Montrachet commune, bordering Puligny-Montrachet, on a gentle slope flanking the hillside. This climat of approximately 5 hectares presents the rare particularity of welcoming both Burgundian varieties, Chardonnay occupying roughly one third of the climat and Pinot Noir the remaining two thirds, due to particular pedological composition. The soil is clayey-calcareous with high iron oxide content, the ferruginous red earth characteristic of northern Chassagne that confers on Chardonnays a mineral depth, a citrussy tension and an immediacy of salinity. The subsoil is particularly stony, which ensures remarkable drainage and forces vine roots to plunge into the rock to find their sustenance, source of the great minerality and the nervous, tense character that Jasper Morris MW associates with this terroir. Thomas Morey exploits here a parcel of vines around forty years old, harvested by hand at full maturity.
Tasting profile
The colour is a pale gold yellow with green reflections, bright and of perfect clarity. The nose is elegant and almost austere in its youth, on aromas of fresh pear, citrus fruits, candied lemon, lime, grapefruit zest, white flowers and an immediately perceptible saline and chalky minerality. A light touch of hazelnut and soft smoke testifies to controlled ageing with a very small proportion of new oak. On the palate, the wine is absolutely clear, linear and precise: the acidity is vivid and nervy, structuring a substance at once fresh and slightly creamy, with crisp fruit alternating between green notes and pale yellow accents. The finish is long, citrussy, saline and mineral, with remarkable persistence, stretching across notes of chalk and wet flint. An elegant Chardonnay, accessible in its youth but destined for fine evolution in the cellar over six to ten years.
The domaine
Thomas Morey represents the tenth generation of a wine family established in Chassagne-Montrachet since 1643. He founded his own domaine in 2006 with his wife Sylvie, on 13 hectares certified organic since 2017. His style is distinguished by a deliberate search for lightness, tension and absolute terroir definition, inspired by references such as Jean-Marc Roulot. The Chardonnays ferment with native yeasts and are aged on very fine lees in 228 and 350-litre barrels, with only 20% new oak, without lees stirring or with very occasional stirring, then rest in tank before bottling after 16 to 18 months of ageing. Sulphur is used to the strict minimum, never during fermentation, leaving terroir all the space to express itself with absolute purity. Remarkably, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti has entrusted Thomas Morey with the care of its vines in the legendary Montrachet Grand Cru, a unique consecration that testifies to his viticultural excellence.
Food pairing
This Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Macherelles will pair with finesse on roasted sea bass with fresh herb butter, scallop kernels in lemon white butter, grilled lobster with tarragon, sole meunière, green asparagus risotto with Parmesan or Bresse chicken in a creamy morel sauce. It will also find fine harmony with aged soft cheeses such as Chaource or Brie de Meaux. Served between 12 and 14 °C, it will express all the minerality and precision of a premier cru of great sincerity.
