Ripe white fruits, hazelnut, and the minerality characteristic of Morgeot. An ample, elegant wine from Domaine Bachey-Legros with impressive length.
The Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Petits Clos Vieilles Vignes 2024 from Domaine Bachey-Legros is the most precious and eagerly awaited cuvée from this historic family estate, established in Santenay six generations ago. Made from old Chardonnay vines planted between 1935 and 1955 on one of Chassagne-Montrachet's most recognised and generous terroirs, this Premier Cru embodies everything old Burgundian vines do best, expressing remarkable concentration, depth, and eloquence.
The terroir of Petits Clos within Morgeot
Morgeot is the largest and most celebrated Premier Cru climat of Chassagne-Montrachet, spanning over 50 hectares between the village and the Santenay boundary. The Petits Clos parcel, a micro-terroir within this larger ensemble, sits just above the domaine in a privileged hillside position with deep argilo-calcareous soils whose geological richness and complexity underpin the generosity and power characteristic of Morgeot wines. The Bachey-Legros vines, most planted between 1935 and 1955, are now 70 to 90 years old, their roots reaching deep into the limestone to naturally produce very low yields and grapes of incomparable concentration and aromatic intensity. The berries are small, thick-skinned, laden with natural sugars, and often millerandé, amplifying still further the aromatic concentration of these precious old vines. Winemaking is precise and traditional, with gentle, controlled pneumatic pressing, low-temperature alcoholic fermentation on fine lees in oak casks, and 12 to 15 months ageing according to vintage with regular batonnage through malolactic fermentation, using a measured proportion of new oak to preserve the natural energy and elegance of the old vines.
Tasting profile
The colour is pale gold with green highlights, brilliant and clear, reflecting the precision of winemaking. The nose is immediately striking in its richness and complexity, shaped by the natural generosity of Morgeot's terroir and the concentration of old vines: ripe white fruits, peach, pear, and apricot, open with natural amplitude, accompanied by white flowers, fresh almond, and a delicately integrated buttery, brioche note. Fine calcareous minerality asserts itself in the background, bringing depth and tension to a bouquet of absolute generosity and sincerity. On the palate, the texture is rich, ample, and silky, born from the fine lees, supported by fresh, well-integrated acidity that brings tension, balance, and length to a generous whole. The finish is long, fruity, and lightly mineral, with persistence and depth confirming the remarkable quality of these old vines on Morgeot. A Premier Cru approachable now after light decanting, and capable of fine evolution in bottle over ten to fifteen years.
The domaine
Domaine Bachey-Legros is one of the most authentic and principled addresses in the southern Côte de Beaune, founded in the 19th century by François Bachey and transmitted unbroken through six generations, each generation a sole heir preserving and enriching the family legacy. Today, Samuel and Lénaïc Legros, alongside their mother Christiane, continue this ancestral philosophy with passion and modernity across 18 hectares spread between Santenay, Chassagne-Montrachet, and the Maranges. The domaine's strength lies in its old vines, most planted between 1935 and 1955, some over a hundred years old, whose very low yields and concentrated grapes produce wines of remarkable natural intensity and depth. Viticulture is reasoned, with constant attention to soil and vine health, and gentle, precise winemaking in the cellar aims to preserve the balance, energy, and elegance of these old vines in every bottle.
Food pairings
This Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Petits Clos Vieilles Vignes pairs beautifully with roasted wild turbot in beurre blanc, scallops with chive cream, grilled lobster with tarragon, Bresse chicken in champagne sauce, braised sweetbreads with morels, or white truffle risotto. It will also find harmony with soft-paste cheeses such as Chaource or truffle-studded Brillat-Savarin. Serve between 12 and 14°C with 20 minutes of decanting recommended in its youth, and it will reveal the full richness, generosity, and depth of one of Chassagne-Montrachet's great Premier Crus.
