A rare red Chassagne from very old vines at Domaine Bachey-Legros, gourmand and deeply structured on iron-rich terroir.
The Chassagne-Montrachet Les Plantes Momières 2024 from Domaine Bachey-Legros is one of the most compelling and consistently praised cuvées from the domaine, awarded two stars in the Hachette Wine Guide and Coup de Cœur. From venerable vines over 70 years old planted just below the Premier Cru Abbaye de Morgeot, it embodies everything Pinot Noir can achieve in terms of richness and complexity on Chassagne-Montrachet's iron-charged terroir.

Terroir and vineyard

The lieu-dit Les Plantes Momières sits at the foot of Chassagne-Montrachet's hillside vineyards, directly below Premier Cru Abbaye de Morgeot, in a position whose proximity to the Premiers Crus explains the remarkable quality and complexity of this village wine. The parcel is a precious heritage gem of the domaine: planted by Joseph Bachey, grandfather of Christiane, it comprises over 70-year-old vines in excellent health that naturally self-regulate to produce grapes of incomparable concentration and aromatic expression. The brown soil, rich in iron oxides and red clay, is precisely the source of this lieu-dit's distinctive and recognizable character: the deep colour, affirmed tannin structure, and aromatic richness that establish it as a reference in the domaine's red range. Very old Pinot Noir vines are uncommon in this appellation. Winemaking is gentle and precise: cold pre-fermentative maceration, alcoholic fermentation over roughly twelve days, total destemming, cuvaison limited to 17 days with minimal intervention, and soft extraction to preserve the natural elegance of the variety. Ageing for 12 months in oak casks, 20 to 30% new according to vintage.

Tasting profile

The robe is a deep red with carmine highlights, showing good density that reflects the natural concentration of these old vines on iron-rich soils. The nose displays immediate expressiveness and gourmandise, unanimously praised by critics as rich and complex: stewed red fruits, peony and coffee open with absolute frankness and seduction, accompanied by spice notes and delicate integrated oak that adds depth without domination. On the palate, the wine is well-fruited, ample and voluminous, supported by firm yet refined tannins that confer a character of good ageing potential. Natural acidity brings tension and freshness to a fleshy, well-nourished texture. The finish is long, generous and lightly spiced, with persistence and depth confirming the quality of these old vines on terroir so close to the Premiers Crus. A red Chassagne-Montrachet with good cellaring potential, approachable now after generous decanting, and promising lovely evolution over six to ten years.

The domaine

Domaine Bachey-Legros is one of the most authentic and principled addresses in southern Côte de Beaune, founded in the 19th century by François Bachey and transmitted uninterrupted through six generations. Today, Samuel and Lénaïc Legros, alongside their mother Christiane, perpetuate this ancestral philosophy with passion and modernity across 19 hectares, 80% planted before 1950. Tim Atkin MW has ranked the domaine among the Top 10 Burgundy producers to watch. The construction of new cellars in 2017 enabled this family trio to transcend magnificent terroirs further, marrying tradition with precision in every vinification.

Food pairings

This Chassagne-Montrachet Les Plantes Momières pairs beautifully with duck with cherries, roasted lamb rack with Provençal herbs, farm poultry in cream and mushroom sauce, grilled rib steak with porcini, or game birds such as partridge. It will also find harmonious match with aged cheeses like Époisses or Soumaintrain. One hour of decanting is advised. Served between 15 and 16°C, it will reveal all the fruity generosity, ferruginous richness and natural elegance of a red Chassagne-Montrachet from old vines signed by one of Côte de Beaune's most principled families.
