Red and dark fruits, spice and the minerality of Morey. A precise and elegant village wine from Domaine Lécheneaut, with silky tannins and genuine pleasure in the glass.
The Morey-Saint-Denis 2024 from Domaine Lécheneaut is one of the domaine's most complex and generous cuvées, assembled from four complementary parcels that gather the full geological diversity and richness of this Côte de Nuits village into a single glass. Only 4,200 bottles produced each year. With age, it develops notes of mushroom and truffle. A Morey-Saint-Denis of real character, sincere and straightforward in style, at a fair price.
Terroir and vines
This Morey-Saint-Denis village comes from four parcels: Les Pierres Virants making up 80% of the blend, En Seuvrey, Les Cognées and Les Porroux, totalling 22 ouvrées of Pinot Noir averaging 38 years old. These lieux-dits offer remarkable geological diversity: Jurassic limestone and marl-limestone soils, white oolite from the Bathonian at the top of the slope and entroques limestone from the Bajocian lower down, directly above the village, where the small valley modifies certain exposures and creates a more marly soil. This geological complementarity is precisely what creates the complexity and balance of the cuvée: the white limestones of Pierres Virants bring tension and minerality, the marly clays of Cognées and Porroux bring body and depth, En Seuvrey its finesse and freshness. Winemaking follows the domaine's philosophy: exclusively hand-harvested, partial destemming depending on the vintage, fermentation with indigenous yeasts, 18 months ageing in oak with one-third new barrels renewed annually.
Tasting profile
The colour is a confident ruby, bright with carmine-garnet reflections and intense violet nuances. The nose sits between dark fruits, blackcurrant and bilberry, and stone fruits, cherry. Aromas of soft spice and liquorice enrich this first bouquet, accompanied by a characteristic floral note found throughout the domaine's cuvées. On the 2024 vintage, the natural freshness and aromatic precision are particularly striking. On the palate, the wine shows beautiful, well-balanced structure with fine, silky tannins and fresh acidity well integrated, bringing tension and length. The floral touch persists throughout, in a sincere and precise style. With age, this Morey will evolve towards mushroom and truffle notes that will make it a fine dinner wine. Capable of evolving over eight to twelve years.
The domaine
Domaine Lécheneaut was founded in Nuits-Saint-Georges in the late 1950s by Fernand Lécheneaut. In 1986, his sons Philippe and Vincent took over, expanding the domaine to 10 hectares across 18 appellations and modernizing facilities. Since 2017, Jules Lécheneaut, third generation, has joined to ensure continuity of this heritage. The wines consistently show great precision in their ageing and winemaking. Prices have remained reasonable, making this an excellent reference point for Côte de Nuits.
Food pairing
This Morey-Saint-Denis pairs beautifully with beef bourguignon braised slowly, partridge with cabbage, duck with cherries, rack of lamb with Provence herbs, prime rib with wild mushrooms or aged cheeses such as Époisses or Cîteaux. Served between 15 and 16°C with 30 minutes of decanting recommended in its youth, it will reveal all the fruited complexity, mineral precision and sincere, straightforward character of a carefully assembled village Morey-Saint-Denis from one of Côte de Nuits' most principled producers.
