Red fruits, soft spices and a floral note. A precise and approachable village Beaune from Domaine des Croix, supple, fresh and deeply pleasant.
The Beaune Rouge 2024 from Domaine des Croix is the most direct and accessible entry-level cuvée from a domaine whose mission since 2005 has been to demonstrate the true value of Beaune, an appellation that, despite its role as the world capital of Burgundy wine, has for too long been underestimated in favour of more celebrated neighbours. A wine of immediate and honest pleasure, made from four complementary parcels whose blend speaks frankly and generously of everything Pinot Noir can offer on the varied terroirs of this great appellation.

The terroir and parcels

This village Beaune is a blend of four parcels, mixing village vineyards and Premier Cru sites, across a variety of terroirs characteristic of the appellation. These parcels are located in different parts of Beaune's vineyard area, including Les Blanches Fleurs, la Blanchisserie and other lieux-dits that together compose a complete and balanced expression of the appellation. The geological diversity of this blend is precisely the source of its complexity and direct character: clay-limestone, gravel, silt and chalk soils succeed one another from parcel to parcel, each contributing its precise touch to the generosity, freshness and definition of the final wine. David Croix targets a yield of 35 hl/ha, maintaining concentration and quality without compromise. Organic viticulture since 2008. Hand-harvested with two successive selections. Vinification with 15% whole bunches, fermentation with indigenous yeasts in wooden vats. Ageing of 16 months in old oak barrels, then several additional months in vat. Unfiltered and unfined.

Tasting profile

The colour is a beautiful, bright ruby red. The nose shows immediate expressiveness and clarity, with aromas of crisp red fruits, raspberry, cherry and redcurrant, accompanied by a subtle floral note and soft spices. Wines that are very well constructed, with clean aromatics and matter-acidity balance without excess. On the palate, the wine is supple and well-structured, with lovely fruit character supported by fine-grained tannins, fresh acidity well integrated that brings energy and length. The gentle, measured extraction of David Croix is evident in the velvety texture and quality of the tannins. The finish is fruity and persistent, with a natural drinkability and honesty that immediately invite another glass. A village Beaune of remarkable sincerity and quality-to-price ratio.

The domaine

David Croix is originally from Montlouis-sur-Loire. A graduate of Dijon's Master's degree in oenology in 2001, he first revolutionised the style of the négociant Camille Giroud before founding Domaine des Croix in 2005, with American investors, from the former Domaine Duchet. His great mission is to demonstrate the value of Beaune's terroir, the third largest appellation of the Côte d'Or and yet the least known among enthusiasts. The domaine's seven hectares, farmed organically since 2008, are among the brightest rising stars of contemporary Burgundy.

Food pairing

This Beaune Rouge pairs beautifully with herb-roasted poultry, rabbit with mustard, quality beef mince with mushrooms, fine country pâté or a board of soft-paste cheeses such as Époisses or Brillat-Savarin. Served between 15 and 16°C, slightly cool, it will reveal all the fruity generosity and honesty of a village Beaune signed by the winemaker who has made this appellation his great cause and great pride.
