Fine red fruits, spice and the minerality characteristic of Vosne mark this elegant, precise wine from Domaine Lécheneaut. Silky, fresh, with impressive length.
The Vosne-Romanée 2024 from Domaine Lécheneaut is one of the most sought-after cuvées from this respected Nuits domaine, where brothers Philippe and Vincent Lécheneaut have quietly built their reputation since the 1980s on a single conviction: quality begins in the vineyard. Only 2,400 bottles are produced annually from a single parcel in the Aux Ravioles lieu-dit, positioned at the southern edge of the appellation where Vosne's spiced velvetiness meets the mineral structure of Nuits-Saint-Georges in a singular, instantly recognisable balance.
Terroir and vineyard
Domaine Lécheneaut's parcel sits in Aux Ravioles, a lieu-dit low on the slope at the junction of Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-Saint-Georges's Aux Saint-Jacques and Aux Herbues. This geographical position, between two villages of complementary character, shapes this wine's singular nature: Vosne's floral finesse and enveloping spice combine with the mineral structure and precision more typical of Nuits, creating a remarkable complexity and coherence. The soils are clay-limestone, well-drained and naturally rich in minerals. Vines are farmed organically with naturally low yields and exclusively hand-harvested. Winemaking follows the Lécheneaut brothers' philosophy: 15 to 20 per cent whole bunches depending on vintage, native yeast fermentation, gentle extraction via delicate punchdowns, 15 to 18 months ageing in French oak with a modest proportion of new wood, unfiltered.
Tasting profile
The robe is a vermillion red with ruby hues, sometimes tinged with garnet and dark purple, of fine density. The nose is immediately expressive and complex, characteristically Vosne: ripe dark fruits, plum, black cherry and blackcurrant, with a distinctive spiced base of star anise, cinnamon and a light five-spice note, alongside dried violet and rose florals. The proportion of whole bunches brings a freshness and elegant herbal touch that enriches the bouquet with natural, precise complexity. On the palate, the texture is silky and rich, with density inherited from older vines in this lieu-dit, fine-grained tannins and fresh, well-integrated acidity. An iron-tinged minerality runs through the mid-palate, recalling proximity to Nuits. The finish is complex, balanced and impressive in length. A Vosne-Romanée approachable now with pleasure and capable of graceful evolution over eight to twelve years.
The domaine
Domaine Lécheneaut is a quiet, principled reference on the Côte de Nuits, based in Nuits-Saint-Georges. Brothers and partners Philippe and Vincent Lécheneaut farm their vines organically with constant attention to soil health and balanced vine vigour. Their philosophy rests on a simple, unwavering conviction: 75 per cent of wine quality is made in the vineyard. Their range extends from generic Bourgogne to Premiers Crus of Nuits-Saint-Georges, including this confidential Vosne-Romanée which counts among their most precious and personal cuvées.
Food pairings
This Vosne-Romanée pairs beautifully with pigeon with wild mushrooms and peas, Bresse chicken with truffle, herb-crusted lamb rack, partridge with cabbage or aged cheeses such as Époisses or Soumaintrain. A 45-minute decant is advised in its youth. Served at 15 to 17°C, it will reveal the full spiced finesse, natural velvetiness and mineral complexity of a terroir-rooted Vosne-Romanée from one of the Côte de Nuits' most principled domaines.
