Fine red fruits, spice and minerality characteristic of Vosne. Elegant and silky from Chevallier, precise, fresh with beautiful persistence.
The Vosne-Romanée 2023 from Domaine Benoît Chevallier is a luminous and honest introduction to one of Burgundy's most prestigious villages. Behind the apparent simplicity of the village appellation lies the extreme care of a vigneron who accepts no compromise, applying the same rigour to each cuvée as he does to his Premiers Crus. From a modest 4-hectare organic domaine, this Vosne-Romanée village is an invitation to the heart of the Côte de Nuits.
The village of Vosne-Romanée
Vosne-Romanée is often called Burgundy's most illustrious village, one where it is said no common wine exists. Nestled between Vougeot to the north and Nuits-Saint-Georges to the south, this small Côte de Nuits village contains a concentration of Grand Crus unmatched anywhere, Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, La Romanée, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, whose reputation has shone across the world's greatest tables for centuries. The village appellation vineyards benefit from the argilo-limestone soils characteristic of the Côte de Nuits, with an east to south-east aspect that encourages fine ripeness in Pinot Noir while preserving the freshness and aromatic finesse particular to this exceptional terroir. Even at communal level, Vosne-Romanée's soil imprints its signature on every wine, a natural elegance, velvet texture and aromatic depth that few other Burgundian villages can match.
Tasting profile
The colour is a frank and brilliant ruby with fine intensity. The nose is immediately seductive, with fresh red fruit aromas of cherry, raspberry and redcurrant, graced with delicate floral touches of peony and violet. A light spice note and a hint of damp earth add complexity and hint at the prestigious origin. On the palate, the wine unfolds supple and harmonious with fine structure, tannins are delicate and well-wrapped, acidity is bright and balanced, supporting generous fruit without ever becoming heavy. The finish is fresh, fruity and persistent, with that aerial, precise character that is Vosne-Romanée's signature. A wine that combines immediate pleasure with genuine ageing potential.
The domaine
Benoît Chevallier founded his domaine in 2019 by reclaiming family vineyards cultivated for three generations at Vosne-Romanée. A former IT engineer, he now works his vines alone, including parcels in Premier Cru on Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-Saint-Georges. From his first vintage, the domaine was rewarded with the Trophy for Young Talents and praised by the Wine Advocate as one of the rare new talents to emerge at Vosne-Romanée in recent years. Organic viticulture is practiced across the entire domaine, with the constant ambition to reveal, vintage after vintage, the purity and delicacy inherent to this legendary village.
Food pairing
This Vosne-Romanée village pairs beautifully with roasted farmyard poultry, duck breast with cherry, mushroom risotto or a selection of soft cheeses such as mature Brie de Meaux or Chaource. It will also be appreciated lightly chambré as an aperitif, with a few slices of fine charcuterie.
