Perfumed, juicy, effortless elegance, Vosne-Romanée in its purest form, from Domaine Benoît Chevallier
The Vosne-Romanée 2023 from Domaine Benoît Chevallier is a luminous and sincere introduction to one of Burgundy's most prestigious villages. Behind the apparent simplicity of a village appellation lies the extreme care of a vigneron who refuses compromise, applying the same rigour to each cuvée as to his Premier Crus. From a mere 4-hectare estate farmed organically, this Vosne-Romanée village is an invitation to the heart of the Côte de Nuits.
The village of Vosne-Romanée
Vosne-Romanée is often called the most illustrious village in Burgundy, the place where, it is said, no common wine exists. Nestled between Vougeot to the north and Nuits-Saint-Georges to the south, this small Côte de Nuits village is home to a unique concentration of Grand Crus, Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, La Romanée, Romanée-Saint-Vivant, whose reputation has shone for centuries on the world's greatest tables. The village appellation vineyards benefit from the argilo-calcareous soils characteristic of the Côte de Nuits, with an east to south-east aspect that favours good ripeness of Pinot Noir while preserving the freshness and aromatic finesse particular to this exceptional terroir. Even at the communal appellation level, the earth of Vosne-Romanée imprints on every wine its signature, a natural elegance, velvety texture and aromatic depth that few other Burgundy villages can match.
Tasting profile
The colour is a frank and brilliant ruby, of fine intensity. The nose is immediately seductive, showing fresh red fruits, cherry, raspberry, redcurrant, graced by delicate floral notes of peony and violet. A light peppery hint and a note of damp earth add complexity and hint at the prestigious origin of the terroir. On the palate, the wine reveals itself as supple, harmonious and well-structured, the tannins fine and well-wrapped, the acidity lively and balanced, supporting a generous structure without ever weighing down the whole. The finish is fresh, fruity and persistent, with that airy and precise character that is the hallmark of Vosne-Romanée. A wine that combines immediate pleasure with true ageing potential.
The estate
Benoît Chevallier founded his domaine in 2019, taking over family land cultivated for three generations at Vosne-Romanée. A former IT engineer, he now devotes himself solely to tending his vines, including parcels in Premier Cru on Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-Saint-Georges. From his first vintage, the domaine was rewarded with the Trophy for Young Talent and hailed by Wine Advocate as one of the rare new talents to have emerged at Vosne-Romanée in recent years. Organic viticulture is practised across the entire estate, with the constant ambition of revealing, vintage after vintage, the purity and finesse characteristic of this mythical village.
Food pairings
This Vosne-Romanée village will pair beautifully with farm-raised roasted poultry, duck breast with cherries, porcini risotto or a plate of soft-rind cheeses such as Brie de Meaux or aged Chaource. It will also be appreciated slightly chambré as an aperitif, with a few slices of fine charcuterie.
