Fine red fruits, violet and deep minerality from Vosne. A Premier Cru of great elegance from Domaine Benoît Chevallier.
The Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts 2023 from Domaine Benoît Chevallier is one of the purest and most refined expressions of this exceptional Côte de Nuits climat. From a domaine of just 4 hectares farmed organically, this wine testifies to uncompromising artisanal work by a vigneron whom Wine Advocate has praised as one of the rare emerging talents at Vosne-Romanée in recent years.
The terroir of Les Beaux Monts
Situated above 300 metres altitude, the Les Beaux Monts climat extends across 11.4 hectares between the communes of Vosne-Romanée and Flagey-Échézeaux, just above the Grand Crus Échézeaux and Richebourg. Its name does not refer to landscape beauty, but derives from the pre-Indo-European term bal or baus, meaning 'height' or 'rocky escarpment'. The monks of Cîteaux abbey recognised its excellence as early as 1297. The soils, composed of iron-rich clay on a Jurassic limestone base, impart a fine structure and characteristic minerality to the wines. The south-east exposure and the slightly cooler microclimate of the upper slope bring freshness and aromatic precision that distinguish this climat among the finest Premier Crus of Vosne-Romanée.
Tasting profile
The robe is deep ruby, bright and clear. The nose opens to a bouquet of great finesse: fresh red fruits (cherry, redcurrant), wild blueberry and ripe plum mingle with touches of violet, sweet spices, orange zest and raw cocoa. On the palate, the marriage between ripe fruit and terroir freshness is striking. The tannins are of extremely delicate grain, the body is elegant and full, and the finish is long and perfumed, unfolding continuously. With a few years of ageing, notes of preserved plum and gingerbread will enrich the aromatic palette.
The domaine
Benoît Chevallier founded his domaine in 2019, taking over family land cultivated for three generations at Vosne-Romanée. A former software engineer, he now works his vines alone, including parcels in Premier Cru on Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-Saint-Georges. From his first vintage, the domaine was awarded the Trophy for Young Talents. Organic viticulture is practised across the entire domaine, with the constant ambition to reveal, vintage after vintage, the purity and finesse characteristic of Vosne-Romanée.
Food pairings
This Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru pairs beautifully with beef fillet en croûte, roasted pigeon with ceps, veal chop with black truffle, or aged cheese such as Époisses or aged Comté. It can also be enjoyed alone, for contemplation.
Serving and storage
Serve at 15–17 °C. Decanting advised: 30 to 45 minutes. Drinking window: 8 to 15 years. Ideal storage: cellar at 12–14 °C, away from light and vibration.
