Fine red fruits, spice, and a delicate floral note. A precise and elegant Chassagne from Bertrand Bachelet, supple, fresh, and refined.
The Chassagne-Montrachet Les Lombardes Rouge 2024 from Domaine Bertrand Bachelet is one of the most intriguing and compelling cuvées from an appellation renowned worldwide for its great Chardonnays, yet which also produces, quietly, Pinot Noirs of remarkable finesse and precision. A dependable wine from fine Chassagne terroir, fruited and generous, with deep attack, a fairly powerful mid-palate, and a soft, harmonious finish.

The terroir of Les Lombardes

Chassagne-Montrachet, better known for white wines, also produces reds of real quality. It is the complexity of the terroir that allows both grape varieties to flourish together. For this appellation, the domaine's red wines come from the lieu-dit Les Lombardes. This terroir is distinguished by brown soil, a sign of richness in iron oxide. These iron oxides, which give the soil its characteristic brown-red colour, are precisely what brings the depth, structure, and aromatic richness that set the reds of Chassagne apart from those of neighbouring villages. The lieux-dits Les Lombardes and Les Benoites lie respectively at the centre and south of the appellation. Chassagne-Montrachet's soils are prized for their quality, partly owing to the presence of iron oxide, colouring these vineyard terroirs in brown-red. The grapes are destemmed before vinification in concrete vats for three weeks. During this time, some pump-overs are carried out to extract freshness from the fruit. Ageing continues for roughly 12 months with around 30 percent new oak.

Tasting profile

A garnet ruby colour and an expressive nose of spice and red fruits that carry through to the palate. Notes of blackcurrant, liquorice, and mocha form the bouquet. This red Chassagne offers a fine tannin structure dressed in subtly toasted and vanilla notes from ageing. The 2024 vintage's natural freshness preserves the brightness and tension of the fruit, with silky tannins drawn from gentle pump-overs, and a soft finish, harmonious with attractive spiced persistence. A fruited and generous red wine that delivers real power on the palate, with tannins that support the finish well. Approachable now and capable of developing pleasantly over five to eight years.

The domaine

A passion for wine led Bertrand Bachelet to take over his father Jean-Louis's family domaine in 2011. Now at the helm of 13 hectares spread from Maranges to Pommard, Bertrand practices reasoned viticulture and uses Royat training. The range is marked by wines with ripe, intense fruit. The reds, which make up the bulk of production, are vinified destemmed in concrete vats and display silky tannins.

Food and wine pairing

This wine pairs beautifully with good red meat. An excellent Côte de Beaune cuvée to enjoy with veal chops and mushrooms. It will also suit lamb with Provençal herbs, duck breast with cherries, fine pâté de campagne, or a board of aged cheeses such as Époisses or young Comté. Served between 15 and 16 degrees Celsius, with light decanting advised, it will reveal the full fruited generosity and the iron-rich depth of a Chassagne-Montrachet rouge made with care and passion.
