Red and black fruits, spices, and the minerality characteristic of Savigny from Domaine des Croix. An elegant and precise Premier Cru with silky tannins and immediate appeal.
The Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Peuillets 2024 from Domaine des Croix is among the most elegant and refined Premier Crus in David Croix's range, a wine whispered about among those in the know. This beautifully balanced and characterful red unfolds a ribbon of small red fruits that emerge languidly across the palate. Finely spiced notes bring distinctive personality to this wine of impressive length, with good flesh supported by fine tannins and a persistent finish marked by subtle animal notes and well-integrated oak.

Terroir and the vineyard

Les Peuillets comprises 57 ares of Pinot Noir over 50 years old, planted in 1971, rooted in a very sandy clay-limestone terroir situated below the Marconnets, at the entrance to the village of Savigny-lès-Beaune, bordering the Beaune appellation, on an alluvial cone with highly stony limestone soils. This terroir of chalky, stony and sandy soils distinguishes itself clearly from the denser, more clayey parcels of Domaine des Croix in Beaune and Corton. Here, the lightness and permeability of the soils produce a Pinot Noir of natural delicacy, finesse and freshness that sets it apart immediately. The parcel borders the Beaune appellation, faces east, and sits at an average altitude of 250 metres on a gently sloping hillside. Organic viticulture since 2008. Hand-harvested with two successive selections. Vinification with 20 percent whole bunches, fermentation with native yeasts in open wooden vats. Ageing of 16 months in old oak barrels, then several months blending in vat. Unfined and unfiltered.

Tasting profile

The colour is a bright, clear ruby red with cherry-red reflections, lively and luminous. The exhalation of ripe cherry and raspberry is wrapped in an elegant spiced framework within a sensual and appetising bouquet. Slightly peppery and animal notes bring distinctive personality and added depth to this bouquet of immediate precision and seduction. On the palate, the tannins are very silky with lovely vibrancy. The wine is built on delicacy and elegance, with a brightness of red fruits and fine, nervous structure. Good flesh is supported by fine tannins, the finish persistent and well-marked by subtle saline minerality. Very seductive, full of depth and approachable now, it will age well until 2033.

The domaine

David Croix is originally from Montlouis-sur-Loire. A graduate of Dijon's Master's degree in oenology in 2001, he founded Domaine des Croix in the heart of Beaune with a clear vision: to craft wines that are the purest expression of terroir and vintage. The domaine's seven hectares are among Burgundy's brightest rising stars. Its wines are seductive and delicious, with serious depth, cascading textures and fine structure.

Food pairings

This Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Peuillets will pair beautifully with roasted duck breast with redcurrant sauce and glazed turnips, any game bird, long-simmered beef Bourguignon, ham cooked in lees, Poulet Gaston Gérard, or herb-crusted lamb. Served between 16 and 17°C with gentle decanting recommended, it will reveal all the fruity delicacy, mineral finesse and refined elegance of a Premier Cru Savigny-lès-Beaune from Burgundy's most compelling rising talent.
