Fine red fruits, floral and lightly spiced. Elegant and complex in Arlaud's airy style, silky and precise.
The Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Ruchots 2023 from Domaine Arlaud is the domaine's flagship Premier Cru and one of the most coveted bottles in the entire Morey-Saint-Denis appellation. The Les Ruchots Premier Cru displays a denser, more powerful and mineral profile than all other Premier Crus of this appellation. Domaine Arlaud's Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Ruchots possesses a brilliant dimension, great freshness of fruit and considerable complexity and length on the palate, with notes of bark and graphite. Only 3,600 bottles produced each year for a wine that rivals the greatest of the Côte de Nuits.

The terroir of Les Ruchots

The name "Les Ruchots" is a variant of "Reuchaux", a Burgundian diminutive of Roche, meaning small rocky outcrops more or less exposed at ground level. Les Ruchots sits on the same rock layer as Clos de la Roche, just below Clos de Tart. Character: wines from Les Ruchots are mineral, dense, powerful and complex. This exceptional geographical position is the key to understanding this terroir. By sharing the same limestone rock layer as Clos de la Roche, a Grand Cru recognised among the greatest of Morey-Saint-Denis, Les Ruchots benefits from a geological continuity that explains its density, depth and extraordinary graphitic minerality for a Premier Cru. The parcel sits on the same rock layer as Clos de la Roche, just below Clos de Tart. After maceration, fermentation begins naturally for at least 20 days, with minimal punch-downs. At pressing, free-run and press juices are separated before transfer to barrel. Whole-bunch fermentation has been used since 2008, but the percentage of uncrushed grapes varies by vintage to maintain consistency and does not exceed 30%. Cyprien seeks wines of great delicacy with silky, finely-textured tannins.

Tasting profile

On the nose the wine offers an incredible aromatic palette with spiced notes, hints of dried tobacco, roasted character and lovely notes of well-ripe dark fruits. The minerality is pronounced, the density marked, this cuvée presents immense ageing potential. Over time it will develop truffled nuances, enriching its character further. Situated on the same rock layer as the Grand Cru Clos de la Roche, it produces a very mineral, dense and complex wine. The structure is maintained in fine detail by stunning minerality. The tannins are perfectly ripe and enfold the whole with refinement. A wild energy characteristic of the greatest wines. It possesses breeding, depth, refined juice, power, sap, so tempting while revealing little of itself. If you are patient enough, you will have the privilege of discovering that its fruity notes evolve towards truffle.

The domaine

The origins of Domaine Arlaud go back to the Second World War, when Ardèchois Joseph Arlaud met and married Renée Amiot, a Burgundian whose family owned vineyards. In 1982, their son Hervé took over and developed estate bottling. The third generation, Bertille, Cyprien and Romain, now manage the operation with one constant conviction: healthy, high-quality grapes are sufficient to aim for excellence. The 15-hectare vineyard is certified in organic and biodynamic farming and includes beautiful terroirs across 19 appellations, from Bourgogne to Échézeaux, passing through Vosne-Romanée, including 4 Grand Crus: Bonnes-Mares, Charmes-Chambertin, Clos Saint-Denis and Clos de la Roche. Vines and soils are well-worked through horse ploughing to limit soil erosion. Vinification is carried out by gravity, ageing is increasingly well-controlled, and the wine undergoes neither fining nor filtration, producing magnificent, very pure wines of remarkable finesse.

Food and wine pairings

This Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Ruchots will pair sublimely with game birds such as roasted woodcock on canapé, partridge with cabbage, hare royale, beef fillet in black truffle jus or veal rack with wild mushrooms. It will also find lovely harmony with aged cheeses such as Époisses or Cîteaux. Two hours of decanting is recommended in its youth. Served between 15 and 17°C, it will progressively reveal all the graphitic minerality, density and breeding of a Premier Cru that shares its soul with the greatest Grand Crus of Morey-Saint-Denis.
