Red and dark berries, rose, spice, and profound minerality. A Grand Cru of remarkable elegance from Domaine Arlaud.
The Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2023 from Domaine Arlaud is one of the most seductive and accessible expressions of the nine Grand Crus of Gevrey-Chambertin, a biodynamic Pinot Noir that offers a refined and delicate expression of this prestigious terroir. The cru lives up to its name, offering a softer, silkier style than its Gevrey-Chambertin neighbours. In the precise and exacting hands of Cyprien Arlaud, it achieves vintage after vintage a level of purity, finesse, and elegance that confirms the Domaine Arlaud's place among the most admired rising values of the Côte de Nuits.
The terroir and vineyard
The Domaine Arlaud's parcel lies in the Mazoyères-Chambertin section of the Charmes-Chambertin appellation, at the boundary with Morey-Saint-Denis. The soil is sandy, argilo-calcareous, anchoring the Pinot Noir vines deeply and allowing them to draw nourishment from biodynamically stimulated earth. This sandy, well-draining texture is precisely what gives Charmes-Chambertin its distinctive character among the Grand Crus of the commune: it confers a particular accessibility and charm, making the wine softer and more gourmand than its more austere neighbours. Vinification is careful, with 25% of the harvest vinified as whole bunches and the remainder destemmed. Fermentation occurs with native yeasts, and ageing lasts approximately 14 months in oak, of which 30% is new.
Tasting profile
On the nose, the Grand Cru reveals intense aromas of ripe red fruits, cherries and strawberries, interwoven with spicy notes and a subtle hint of vanilla. A complex and varied bouquet of strawberry, blueberry, and raspberry for the fruit, peony for the floral touch, and finally subtly chocolatey and spicy notes. The fruit is generous, almost opulent, yet without neglecting structure and freshness. On the palate, a dense and complex nose of dark fruits, herbal notes, spices, pepper, and char. The palate is broad and fleshy, revealing great complexity, silky tannins, and outstanding persistence. A great, succulent wine of phenomenal length, capable of ageing admirably for twenty years or more.
The domaine
The origins of Domaine Arlaud trace to the Second World War, when Joseph Arlaud from the Ardèche met and married Renée Amiot, a Burgundian whose family owned vineyards. In 1982, their son Hervé took over and developed bottling operations. Today, the third generation, Bertille, Cyprien, and Romain, run the estate with a constant conviction: healthy, high-quality grapes are enough to aim for excellence. Cyprien Arlaud joined the domaine in 1997 and has been vinifying since 2004, supported in the vineyards by his sister, who established a horse-ploughing service. The 15-hectare vineyard, certified organic since 2004 and biodynamic since 2009, stands as one of the most admired rising values of Morey-Saint-Denis.
Food pairings
This Grand Cru pairs beautifully with roasted pigeon with peas and lardons, côte de boeuf with wild mushrooms, jugged hare, roasted woodcock on canapé, or lamb chops with Provençal herbs. It also harmonises well with aged soft cheeses such as Époisses or Soumaintrain. Decanting for 3 hours is recommended in its youth. Served between 15 and 17 °C, it will progressively reveal all the seduction, generosity, and elegance of a Grand Cru from Gevrey-Chambertin signed by one of the most precise and promising biodynamic domaines of the Côte de Nuits.
