Indulgent red fruits, sweet spices and floral touch. Accessible and generous Gevrey signed by Mortet, very pleasant to drink.
The Gevrey-Chambertin Ma Cuvée 2023 from Arnaud Mortet is the village cuvée signature of a vigneron whose precision and delicacy make each appellation he touches a model of finesse and expressivity. Here is a fine expression of the Arnaud Mortet mark, which could be summed up in two words: finesse and expressivity of terroir. Arnaud Mortet signs here a magnificent Gevrey, all in refinement, a model for the appellation. Far from dedicating himself solely to the grand names of Burgundy wine, Arnaud Mortet proves here that he masters village appellations equally well.
The terroir and the vines
Ma Cuvée is a blend of Pinot Noir from several judiciously chosen parcels, all situated within the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation area. Old vines offer a harvest of high quality to be aged in barrels more or less long depending on the typicality of the vintage. Signed with his name, this cuvée results from the blending of grapes from five parcels spread across the entire appellation. Among them, parcels of La Justice and the Épointures, Champs Chenys, lieu-dits situated south and east of Gevrey-Chambertin on argilo-calcareous soils characteristic of the appellation. Old vines give berries of small size very concentrated, allowing here to obtain a wine fine and rich, all in fruity grace. Arnaud describes this wine as more suited to gastronomy, more in a classic Gevrey strawberry style with some oak to bring creaminess. Vinification is precise and respectful, harvest partially destemmed, alcoholic fermentation in indigenous yeasts exclusively, very moderate pump-overs and punch-downs. Ageing lasts 16 months in oak barrels, one-third new wood, one-third one-year old wood, one-third two-year old wood, a blend of barrel ages that brings complexity and structure without ever dominating the fruit or the terroir.
Tasting profile
The very delicate nose oscillates between small red fruits and a floral universe dominated by rose. There is much sincerity and precision in the expression of Pinot Noir. A fine and slender Gevrey offering crisp and refreshing fruit. The initial nose reveals intense red fruit and pronounced floral character. Then come the sweet spices of the oak which bring to the palate a texture both deep and vibrant. The tannins are crisp. Supple and charming, this Gevrey-Chambertin wafts from the glass with notes of red fruits, plums and exotic spices, framed by a delicate application of elegant oak. Mid-body, ample and enveloping with silky tannins and succulent acidity. A wine accessible today in all its fruity liveliness and capable of evolving harmoniously over five to eight years.
The domaine
Following the premature death of Denis Mortet, his children took up the torch. In 2006, Arnaud Mortet's domaine was born, extending then over a modest four hectares of vineyard in Côte de Nuits. Today Pinot Noir extends over roughly ten hectares of fine crus, and supported by his sister Clémence and his mother, the vigneron signs wines that quickly caught the attention of professional critics. Fine, delicate and fruity, they reveal the character of their original terroir and are assuredly built for fine ageing.
Food pairings
This Gevrey-Chambertin Ma Cuvée pairs beautifully with sliced teal duck and its mandarin gastrique with Pinot, roasted Bresse poultry with herbs, rabbit with mustard, fresh pasta with wild mushrooms or a selection of soft cheeses such as Époisses or Brillat-Savarin. Served between 16 and 17°C, with light decanting advised, it will reveal the full fruited finesse and natural elegance of a Gevrey-Chambertin village signed by one of Côte de Nuits' most precise vignerons.
