Dark berry fruit, rose and spice across Burgundy's largest Grand Cru. Deep, complex and built for the cellar, from Domaine Denis Mortet.
The Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2023 from Domaine Denis Mortet stands among the most coveted releases from this emblematic house, and the Clos de Vougeot itself ranks among the finest expressions of the Côte de Nuits' vastest Grand Cru. Sumptuous on the palate with concentration matching the scale of this immense terroir, it is a bottle of rare grandeur and emotion, drawn from a discreet parcel in the lower reaches of the Clos, where sixty-year-old vines yield a Pinot Noir expression unlike any other.
The terroir and parcel
Clos de Vougeot takes its name from the Vouge, a small stream rising above the village. Founded and walled by the Cistercian monks of Cîteaux Abbey in the twelfth century, remaining in their hands until the Revolution, Clos de Vougeot is the Côte de Nuits' largest single Grand Cru, spanning 80 hectares of contiguous vineyard. Its geological diversity creates a fascinating complexity and stylistic range depending on each parcel's position on the slope. Domaine Denis Mortet's holding is a fine 55-are plot in the upper section of the Clos, known as "des Rois" — a terroir once reserved exclusively for kings. The precious sixty-year-old vines sit at 240 metres altitude in the Clos's lower reaches, planted on brown soils of fine silts. These fine silts, combined with the parcel's position, confer remarkable richness, concentration and fleshy density, underpinned by natural acidity and clayey minerality that some compare to the greatest Chambertin. Winemaking follows the domaine's philosophy: strict berry selection, partially destemmed, fermentation with indigenous yeasts only, moderate punch-downs and pump-overs, classical 18-month ageing in 100% new oak from François, Mortet's sole cooper.
Tasting profile
On the palate, this Grand Cru impresses with its charisma, concentrated fruit and clayey notes evoking the finest Chambertin. The nose reveals aromas of wild blackberries, licorice, coffee, preserved cherry and subtle oak and forest-floor notes. Airy in character, dominated by red fruit and crushed raspberry — a fruity intensity that speaks to the wine's grandeur and cellaring potential. On the palate, the texture is concentrated and dense, the aromatics sharp and vivid, revealing uncomparable finesse. The tannins, powerful yet velvetty in texture from careful barrel work with François's oak, unfold across the palate with impressive amplitude and fullness, confirming the terroir's grandeur. The finish shows impressive length and persistence, with notes of preserved blackberry, coffee and clayey minerality. The ageing potential of this Cru is immense.
The domaine
A family business since its founding by Charles Mortet in 1956, Domaine Denis Mortet entered its golden age under Denis's stewardship in the 1990s. He pioneered a movement of modern vignerons devoted to meticulous vineyard work and techniques inspired by Henri Jayer, crafting wines of intense character from their youth, with aromatic ageing for wines of great class. Denis Mortet died unexpectedly in February 2006. His son Arnaud took on the ambitious task of succession. A brilliant winemaker, he has evolved the wines through his personal style: slightly less concentrated but endowed with greater finesse. Arnaud speaks not of extraction but of "infusion" to describe one of his favoured vinification methods — he is simply one of the Côte de Nuits' brightest stars that serious wine lovers must know.
Food pairing
This Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru pairs sublimely with jugged hare, roasted capon with morels and Burgundy truffles, Wagyu beef fillet with black truffle jus, veal chop with cèpes, or game birds such as roasted woodcock. It finds fine harmony too with ripened soft cheeses like Époisses or Soumaintrain. Decanting for two hours is essential in its youth. Served between 15 and 17 °C, it will gradually reveal all the grandeur, charisma and depth of one of the Côte de Nuits' greatest terroirs.
