Black cherry, violet and peony with a mineral, chalky undertone. Silky, precise and pure, a confidential Grand Cru from a 0.06 hectare biodynamic parcel.
The Échézeaux Grand Cru 2023 from Cyprien Arlaud is one of the most precious and rare cuvées from Cyprien Arlaud's négociant operation — a bottle produced in minimal quantities from a microscopic parcel, where every step from pruning to harvest is personally overseen by the domaine team with the same biodynamic rigour as the family domaine's wines. A classic expression of Burgundy's terroir with splendid red fruit aromas and a beautiful tension on the palate that gives the wine impressive length.

The terroir and parcel

This cuvée is produced from grapes sourced from partner vignerons, for whom the domaine team takes responsibility for all vineyard work, from pruning to harvest. Green harvesting and manual leaf removal, with yields under strict control. The Pinot Noirs come from old vines grown organically, planted in 1965, on a 0.06 hectare parcel with clay-limestone soils. With just 6 ares of vineyard, this cuvée is among the most confidential in Burgundy's vineyards. Located in Flagey-Échézeaux, between Vosne-Romanée and Vougeot, the Grand Cru Échézeaux spans 36 hectares comprising numerous lieux-dits with distinct personalities. This parcel, on well-draining clay-limestone soils facing east to south-east, benefits from the cool, luminous microclimate characteristic of Flagey, which preserves the natural freshness and aromatic precision of Pinot Noir. Vinification is 100 per cent destemmed, with 16 months of ageing in oak barrels, one quarter of which is new wood. Bottled without fining or filtration, following lunar cycles.

Tasting profile

The colour is a deep, luminous garnet red with beautiful density. The nose displays immediate elegance and refinement, with aromas of black cherry, raspberry and ripe red fruits emerging with precision, accompanied by floral notes of violet and peony, a subtle hint of blond tobacco and delicate chalky minerality lingering in the glass. The decision to harvest 100 per cent destemmed gives this cuvée a remarkable purity of fruit and aromatic clarity, without the roughness that stems can sometimes impart. On the palate, the material is silky and well-rounded, supported by tannins of remarkable fineness and grain, and fresh acidity well-integrated that brings tension and length. The finish is long, fruity and lightly spiced, with a persistence and purity that confirm the nobility of the terroir. A Grand Cru of precision and frankness that faithfully reflects Cyprien Arlaud's philosophy, healthy grapes are enough to aim for excellence.

The domaine

Domaine Arlaud traces its origins to 1942, when the Burgundian Renée Amiot met Ardèche native Joseph Arlaud. Hervé Arlaud succeeded his father in 1983, then gave way to his son Cyprien in 2013. To preserve these Burgundy terroirs, the Arluds adopted organic agriculture principles in 2004, then biodynamics in 2009, becoming the first domaine in Morey-Saint-Denis certified in biodynamics in 2014. Since 2003, a new cellar has been installed, prioritising gravity flow. To ensure juice quality, rigorous selection is carried out in the vineyard and in the cellar, where grapes are destemmed and not crushed. Échézeaux Grand Cru is produced under the Cyprien Arlaud label, the négociant operation that complements the family domaine since 2012, with the same biodynamic philosophy and absolute quality standards.

Food pairing suggestions

This Échézeaux Grand Cru will pair beautifully with venison tournedos in mushroom duxelles, Wagyu beef fillet in black truffle jus, lamb rack with Provençal herbs, roasted royal partridge or feathered game such as woodcock on toast. It will also find lovely harmony with soft-paste cheeses such as Époisses or Soumaintrain. An hour of decanting is recommended in its youth. Served between 15 and 17 °C, it will gradually reveal all the refinement, purity and depth of a Côte de Nuits Grand Cru made with absolute rigour and conviction.
