An absolutely singular bottle offered here by Thomas Morey. One of the world's greatest expressions of Chardonnay.
The Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru 2023 from Domaine Thomas Morey is the absolute jewel of the domaine, a bottle that embodies in itself all that the Côte de Beaune knows how to make that is greatest, deepest and most unforgettable in Chardonnay. From vines planted in the 1950s, cultivated in organic farming by the representative of a family line rooted in Chassagne-Montrachet since 1643, this Grand Cru is one of the purest and most luminous expressions of a terroir whose reputation has no equivalent in the world of white wine.

The terroir of Bâtard-Montrachet

Bâtard-Montrachet is one of five Grand Crus of the Côte de Beaune, extending over 11.83 hectares across the communes of Chassagne-Montrachet and Puligny-Montrachet, just below the legendary Montrachet. Its name, evocative and mysterious, is said to refer to the natural son, the "bâtard", of the knight who is believed to have cleared the Montrachet in the Middle Ages. The Domaine Thomas Morey parcel, located on the Chassagne side, is planted with vines over 70 years old, their roots plunging deep into a clayey-calcareous gravelly soil of exceptional richness and geological complexity. This Jurassic subsoil, shaped by millions of years of marine sedimentation, is the foundation upon which Chardonnay builds its grandeur: rare mineral concentration, vertiginous aromatic depth and tension that allows wines to cross the decades without ever losing their freshness. Facing east, Bâtard-Montrachet benefits from ideal morning sunlight that ensures slow and harmonious ripening of the grapes. Remarkably, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti has entrusted Thomas Morey with the care of its precious vines in the legendary Montrachet Grand Cru, a consecration that speaks volumes about this vintner's talent.

Tasting profile

The colour is pale gold with green reflections, of absolute luminosity and clarity, characteristic of precise and minimalist ageing. The nose imposes itself from the first instant with grandeur and complexity: aromas of ripe white fruits, vineyard peach, pear, candied citrus, mingle with notes of white flowers, fresh almond, roasted hazelnut and a silex and chalk minerality that signs the imprint of the Grand Cru. Touches of honey, fresh butter and discreet vanilla testify to masterfully controlled oak ageing. On the palate, the amplitude is impressive: rich, fat and unctuous substance, carried by vivid and precise acidity that gives it remarkable tension and straightness. The balance between power and freshness is stunning, the texture silky and deep, and the endless finish unfolds mineral and iodised aromas of rare persistence and nobility. A wine for meditation, to be kept precious for a minimum of ten years to reveal its full dimension.

The domaine

Thomas Morey represents the tenth generation of a wine family established in Chassagne-Montrachet since 1643. He founded his own domaine in 2006 with his wife Sylvie, on 13 hectares certified organic since 2017. Deliberately departing from the oakier style of the previous generation, Thomas seeks lightness, tension and absolute terroir definition. The Chardonnays ferment with native yeasts and are aged on very fine lees in 228 and 350-litre barrels, with only 20% new oak, then rest in tank before bottling after 16 to 18 months of ageing. No fining, minimum sulphur, never during fermentation, a philosophy that gives terroir all the space to express itself without artifice.

Food pairing

This Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru is a wine of haute gastronomie that deserves the finest tables. It will pair sublimely with roasted lobster in tarragon butter, langoustine in court-bouillon, scallops with white truffle, wild turbot in champagne sauce, braised veal sweetbreads with morels or Bresse chicken in a creamy morel sauce. It will also be sumptuous with a very aged pressed-paste cheese such as 36-month Comté. Served between 12 and 14 °C, in fine white Burgundy glasses, with decanting of 20 to 30 minutes recommended for younger vintages, it will reveal the full power and grace of one of the world's greatest Chardonnays.
