Ripe white fruits, hazelnut and buttery notes. A rich and precise Premier Cru Meursault from Domaine Matrot, broad-shouldered, mineral and with lovely length.
The Meursault Premier Cru Charmes 2023 from Domaine Matrot captures all the fleshy elegance Meursault can offer. The Charmes climat, true to its name, is known for producing the most generous and seductive Meursault wines. In Matrot's hands, it stands out through measured power: ample flesh and velvet texture, while retaining the freshness characteristic of the domaine's style. A textbook Charmes, with this vintage's volume and terroir finesse.
Terroir and vines
Charmes extends across lower slopes on soils rich in clay mixed with limestone pebbles and traces of marl. The domaine's Chardonnay vines, around thirty years old, are farmed organically. Harvest is by hand, fruit destemmed whole. Fermentation is temperature-controlled with indigenous yeasts and 100 per cent malolactic conversion. Ageing takes place in 228-litre oak barrels on fine lees, with restrained new wood, to preserve fruit and balance.
Tasting profile
Pale golden in colour. The nose opens onto ripe yellow fruits, mirabelle and vineyard peach, joined by ripe lemon, yellow apple, white flowers, acacia honey and delicate brioche, with a light mineral reduction. The palate is ample and velvety, generous and expressive, with silky flesh driven by lovely freshness. The finish extends gracefully on saline and crystalline notes.
The domaine
A family domaine since 1835, based in Meursault, Domaine Matrot has been run since 2016 by the sixth generation, sisters Adèle and Elsa Matrot, daughters of Thierry and Pascale, who have preserved the domaine's style while bringing added finesse, making the wines more approachable in youth without compromising their ageing potential. Its Premier Cru Meursaults from Perrières, Charmes and Blagny bear the domaine's signature, marked by vibrant acidity and precise structure.
Food pairing
This Premier Cru Meursault pairs beautifully with lobster, scallops, Bresse chicken with cream, veal or pressed-paste cheese. Served around 12°C, with light decanting, it can be enjoyed now or cellared for a decade.
