White fruit, flint and hazelnut. Domaine Matrot's Premier Cru Blagny is taut and mineral, precise and linear, built for the cellar.
The Meursault Premier Cru Blagny 2023 from Domaine Matrot is one of the most singular expressions from the estate: linear, fine and intensely mineral. Blagny, high on the slope, imposes shallow, limestone and stony soils that demand precise Chardonnay vinification without heaviness, bringing out the natural tension of the place. A fresh, mineral wine, pure and focused, with genuine ageing potential.

Terroir and vineyard

Premier Cru Blagny, at the edge of Meursault, sits at a notable altitude of 350 metres on the upper slope. Soils are shallow, limestone and stony, placing stress on the Chardonnay that concentrates the fruit and builds tension. Vines are farmed in uncertified organic viticulture. Harvesting is by hand. Berries are whole-bunch pressed on pneumatic equipment, juices settled for 24 hours and placed in barrel. Indigenous yeasts drive fermentation at controlled temperatures with full malolactic conversion. Ageing extends twelve months on lees in non-new oak, one to four years old, then the wine is blended in tank where it matures for a further three months before bottling.

Tasting profile

The colour is pale gold. The nose is fresh and mineral, offering white fruit, citrus and crème fraîche with a trace of flint. On aeration, hints of pastry and flower honey emerge. The palate is intense, unfolding a fresh, taut structure through to a pleasantly saline, crystalline finish.

The domaine

A family estate since 1835, based in Meursault, Domaine Matrot has been run since 2016 by the sixth generation, Adèle and Elsa Matrot, daughters of Thierry and Pascale, who have preserved the domaine's style while bringing added finesse, making the wines approachable younger without compromising their cellaring potential. Its Premier Crus Perrières, Charmes and Blagny show the house signature: vibrant acidity and precise structure.

Food pairing

This Meursault Premier Cru suits wild trout in beurre blanc with sorrel, crayfish in cream sauce, chestnut-stuffed capon or veal escalopes. Serve at 10 to 12°C, with light decanting especially in youth. The wine will drink beautifully between 2028 and 2033.
