White flowers, citrus, hazelnut and fine minerality. A precise and elegant Premier Cru from Puligny signed by Matrot, fresh, taut and built for the cellar.
The Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne 2023 from Domaine Matrot is a refined and well-structured Puligny, an essential cuvée from the domaine. Situated high on the slope, the climat offers a unique soil composition: very thin soils, a steep hillside and powerful wind that constantly sweeps across the parcel. A precise and bright wine, longer than it is broad, with a savoury and mineral persistence.

The terroir and vineyard

The Premier Cru La Garenne sits just above the climat Champ Gain, itself above the Folatières, high on the slope at the edge of the Saint Aubin combe. The southeast-facing hillside is very steep, and the soil, extremely thin, rests on argilo-calcareous subsoils with limestone slabs. The name Garenne recalls an enclosed wood reserved for the lord's hunting. The Chardonnay vines, around thirty years old, are farmed organically with hand harvesting. Grapes are pressed as whole clusters, with 24 hours settling before débourbage and barrel transfer. Fermentation occurs with native yeasts, with 100% malolactic. Ageing takes place in Burgundy barrels, on fine lees, with measured new wood, before filtration at bottling.

Tasting profile

The colour is pale yellow with green glints. The first nose reveals white fruit notes, peach and nectarine, with a touch of flint and delicate white flowers. The evolution is carried by minerality, fresh almond and white flowers. On the palate, the balance is fine, with a lively acidity thread, grapefruit and nectarine, and a body longer than broad. The finish is coherent, persistent, savoury and mineral.

The domaine

A family domaine since 1835, based in Meursault, Domaine Matrot has been run since 2016 by the sixth generation, Adèle and Elsa Matrot, daughters of Thierry and Pascale, who have preserved the domaine's style while bringing added finesse, making the wines approachable when young without compromising their ageing potential. Its Premier Crus from Meursault and Puligny Montrachet count among the great references of the Côte de Beaune.

Food pairings

This Puligny Montrachet pairs well with lightly seared John Dory, sole meunière, shellfish, foie gras, Bresse chicken or hard pressed cheese. Served around 12 to 14°C, with decanting for younger vintages, it can be enjoyed now or cellared for several years to reveal its full potential.
