Fine red berries, rose and delicate spice. A precise, silky Chambolle-Musigny from Domaine Anne Sigaut, elegant, fresh and of real finesse.
The Chambolle-Musigny Derrière le Four 2023 from Domaine Anne and Hervé Sigaut comes from a confidential climat and delivers a wine of real elegance: precise, silky, all lace. A Chambolle of great finesse, with fine red fruit, rose and delicate spice, fresh and subtle, signed by one of the artisanal estates that, quietly, rank among the finest in the village.
Terroir and vines
Derrière le Four, behind the church, sits high on the slope, at the mouth of the combe that cuts into the vineyard at its heart. The soil is clay-limestone, made of calcareous marls and stony scree washed down from the hillside, with a rich, heavy clay that gives the wine more sap and structure than the classic village wines. The Pinot Noir vines are around forty years old, planted in 1973. They yield small, concentrated berries, producing a wine of great intensity and fine class. The estate has farmed organically since flowering, follows the lunar calendar and ploughs certain parcels with a horse, with very low yields. Fermentation is gentle, lasting about three weeks, with measured pigeage to preserve finesse and aromatic expression. The wine is aged for twelve to fourteen months in oak barrels, with judicious use of new wood and a single racking before bottling, without fining or filtration.
Tasting profile
The colour is a deep ruby red. The nose opens on refined aromas of small red fruit, cherry and fresh raspberry, dried rose and violet, with a touch of spice and a slightly smoky note, and a hint of dried fruit that adds complexity. On the palate, the attack is supple and deep, with silky tannins and a subtle mineral thread. The whole is delicate and precise, with a lingering finish of great finesse.
The estate
Hervé Sigaut and his wife Anne took over the estate from Maurice Sigaut in 1990: seven hectares of vines in Chambolle-Musigny and Morey-Saint-Denis, vinified by Anne in a classic Burgundy style, balanced and built to evolve well over time. The estate has gradually joined the top tier of Burgundy, with Chambolle wines among the most clear-cut and racy, crowned by the Premier Cru Les Sentiers.
Food and wine pairing
This Chambolle pairs well with fillet of duckling, creamy cep risotto, rabbit ragout, orange duck confit, feathered game or Gruyère. Served at around 15 to 16 °C, it is enjoyable now, or can be kept for a decade.
The ageing details described are taken from the recent vintage sheets for this cuvée: the exact share of new oak for the 2023 should be confirmed with the domaine.
