A Saint-Joseph with bright fruit, mingling violet, white pepper and granitic finesse, carried by a juicy and elegantly taut palate.
The Saint-Joseph Rouge Rue des Poissonniers, Paris XVIIIe 2024 from Julien Pilon is one of the most beloved and accessible cuvées in the range, and one of the most mischievous. Its name is a Parisian address, Rue des Poissonniers in the 18th arrondissement, the vibrant working-class neighbourhood of north Paris where Julien Pilon loved to drink wine with friends during his formative years. A wink to a life well lived, to conviviality and sharing, exactly what this Saint-Joseph embodies in the glass. Rated 90/100 by Revue du Vin de France and a committee favourite at 94/100 on the 2022 vintage, this 100% granitic Syrah is regularly hailed as one of the finest surprises of the appellation.
The terroir and vineyard
Rue des Poissonniers is drawn from a blend of parcels situated mainly in the northern part of the Saint-Joseph appellation, around the communes of Chavanay, Vion and Saint-Pierre-de-Bœuf, on the granitic sands characteristic of this northern sector. These poor, sandy and well-draining soils are the signature of the finest Saint-Joseph reds, naturally disciplining vine vigour, concentrating aromas and giving Syrah its mineral tension, vibrancy and freshness. The Saint-Joseph appellation, the largest in the northern Rhône with 60 kilometres of vineyard along the river, produces Syrahs less powerful and less tannic than Côte Rôtie or Cornas, but marked by gourmandise, aromatic precision and drinkability that make it one of the most seductive expressions of the variety in France. Harvest is by hand, grapes are fully destemmed and crushed, vinification takes place in open stainless steel vats for three to four weeks with frequent punch-downs, and ageing for twelve months in 225 and 500-litre barrels with only 10% new oak preserves fruit purity and terroir tension.
Tasting profile
The colour is a deep ruby red with violet reflections, bright and of fine intensity. The nose is refined, elegant and immediately expressive, mingling ripe red fruit aromas, black cherry, blackcurrant and raspberry, with peppery and spicy notes characteristic of granitic Syrah, touched by violet florality and a hint of light smoke that marks the northern terroir. With aeration, notes of blackberry and liquorice enrich the bouquet. On the palate, Syrah expresses itself with gourmandise and precision, the attack is fresh and crisp, the tannins are silky, gliding and creamy in texture, enveloping the palate with comfort and elegance. The material is full and dense, traversed by fine mineral brightness that brings depth and length. The finish is long, persistent and peppery, with that return of crisp fruit and slight iodine that marks great Syrahs from granitic sands. A wine that invites conviviality, accessible today and capable of evolving over five to eight years.
The domain
Julien Pilon is one of the most endearing and promising figures of the northern Rhône vineyard. Established at Chavanay on the right bank of the Rhône, he made his first vintages in 2010 in his parents' garage, without land or cellar. Trained under Yves Cuilleron, at Mas Amiel in Roussillon, in Spain at Terra Remota, then under Pierre and Pascale Gaillard and finally Pierre-Jean Villa at Chavanay, he has forged a precise and recognizable personal style, acclaimed with a star by Revue du Vin de France. His approach is clear, fruit purity, refinement in ageing, and terroir truth in every glass. His red wines, elegant, stripped-back and digestible, are every bit as successful as his whites, and Rue des Poissonniers is the most convincing and accessible proof.
Food and wine pairings
This Saint-Joseph Rouge will pair beautifully with roast veal with wild mushrooms, braised beef cheeks in red wine, summer grills, a plate of fine charcuterie, lamb tagine with prunes or lamb cutlets with garrigue herbs. It will also find fine harmony with pressed-paste cheeses such as aged Comté or Saint-Nectaire. Served between 15 and 17°C, lightly chambered, it will reveal all the gourmandise and precision of a great Saint-Joseph Syrah.
