A rare Saint-Joseph white, Julien Pilon's true specialty.
The Saint-Joseph Blanc Dimanche à Lima 2024 from Julien Pilon is the cuvée that carries the entire history of this domaine, and its name is the key. It was on a Sunday in Lima, Peru, that Julien and his wife's journey around the world came to an end, and the irrevocable decision was made to return home and make wine. This iconic cuvée, rated 91/100 by Revue du Vin de France, is one of the most complex, richest and most gastronomic expressions in the range, a Saint-Joseph blanc of great stature, an equal-parts blend of Marsanne and Roussanne, vinified with the precision and delicacy that built the domaine's reputation.
Terroir and Vines
Dimanche à Lima is a blend of six parcels spread across the Saint-Joseph appellation from north to south, with the majority concentrated around the commune of Chavanay in the north. The vines are planted on steep hillsides overlooking the Rhône, with south to south-east exposure, ideal for generous sunlight while preserving the natural freshness of northern white grape varieties. The soils are predominantly granite-based sands, with some areas showing calcareous layers, a dual pedological character that gives the cuvée both the mineral tension and nervous character typical of northern Rhône granites and the natural richness and fat of calcareous terroirs. Marsanne and Roussanne, at 50% each, form a classic and complementary blend: Marsanne brings structure, richness, and floral, honeyed notes, while Roussanne contributes elegance, natural acidity and white fruit and citrus aromas. Each parcel is hand-harvested, vinified and aged separately, then blended in barrels, a parcel-focused approach that ensures terroir fidelity and complexity in every vintage.
Tasting Profile
The colour is a beautiful luminous gold, brilliant and of fine intensity. The nose is of remarkable aromatic richness and complexity that imposes itself from the first moment: intense floral notes, white flowers, acacia, honeysuckle, mingle with aromas of white-fleshed fruits, melon and citrus, with deep honeyed touches and a light beeswax note that evokes the fullness of ripe Marsanne. Subtle hints of tropical fruits, mango, passion fruit, enrich this bouquet with rare generosity. On the palate, the wine is ample, dense and of great opulence, with rich, fat matter that unfolds with elegance. The tension characteristic of Saint-Joseph's granite terroirs runs through the palate like a guiding thread, bringing freshness and straightness to a generous body. The texture is silky and deep, and the long finish concludes with delicate bitter notes and persistent citrus that give the wine its great length and digestibility. A wine of gastronomy in every sense of the word, to drink from today with a 20-minute decant or to keep five to eight years in the cellar.
The Domaine
Julien Pilon is one of the most engaging and promising figures in the northern Rhône vineyard. Based in Chavanay on the right bank of the Rhône, he vinified his first vintages in 2010 in his parents' garage, with no land or cellar, before progressively building a producer-négociant structure whose reputation has grown vintage after vintage, praised with one star by Revue du Vin de France. Trained under Yves Cuilleron, then at Mas Amiel in Roussillon, in Spain at Terra Remota, in Banyuls alongside Pierre and Pascale Gaillard, and finally under Pierre-Jean Villa in Chavanay, he has forged a precise and recognizable personal style. His line is clear: care for ageing, individualize each parcel and each vintage, respect the purity of fruit and the finesse of wine. His range today extends from IGP Collines Rhodaniennes to Hermitage Grand Cru, each cuvée bearing a fanciful and memorable name, Dimanche à Lima, On the Rhône Again, Mon Grand Père était Limonadier, like so many postcards from a life well-lived.
Food Pairings
This Saint-Joseph Blanc Dimanche à Lima will pair sublimely with crayfish fricassée with cream, roasted sea bass fillets with fresh herbs, scallops with white truffle, pike quenelles with beurre blanc, Bresse chicken with cream and morels, or braised veal sweetbreads with wild mushrooms. It will also find fine harmony with pressed-curd cheeses such as 18-month Comté or aged Saint-Nectaire. Served between 12 and 13°C, with light decanting advised, it will reveal all the richness, complexity and tension of a great northern Rhône white.
