A Pinot Noir of radiant finesse from Domaine Justin Girardin, weaving fresh cherry, peony and raspberry with a supple, soaring palate carried by delicate minerality: a harmonious Santenay, already delicious and promising a lovely evolution.
The Santenay 1er Cru Beauregard 2022 from Domaine Justin Girardin is the most elegant and highest-altitude cuvée the domaine produces on Santenay, a Premier Cru from the upper reaches of the commune's north-facing slope, in direct continuation of the terroirs of Chassagne-Montrachet, vinified biodynamically with the precision and respect for living soils that are the hallmark of this thirteenth-generation winegrower. On the generous, ripe 2022 vintage, this Pinot Noir expresses all the finesse, floral delicacy and aromatic structure of a terroir whose name says it all: a beautiful view, and a great wine.
The terroir of Beauregard
In old French, the expression biaus regart means "beautiful view," and the view from these heights on the Santenay hillside is indeed striking: the Côte de Beaune vineyard stretches eastward to the horizon, while the Maranges plain opens to the west, dominated by the familiar silhouette of the Mont des Trois Croix. This Premier Cru, located to the northeast of the village of Santenay near the windmill known as "Moulin Sorine," lies in direct continuation of the terroirs of Chassagne-Montrachet, a geological and aromatic kinship that is far from incidental. A climat of the same name, Beauregard, can also be found in Volnay, likewise perched high on the slope, which speaks to the shared identity of these altitude terroirs. The soil, just above the Premier Cru Les Gravières, consists of a clay-limestone subsoil overlaid by shallow Bathonian limestone with gravel, lean, well-drained and with excellent water regulation, which naturally disciplines the vine and gives the wines an elegance and aromatic finesse that are uncommon for the appellation. The vines, approximately 45 years old, are farmed biodynamically, with mass selection and a polyclonal approach, in strict observance of the lunar calendar.
Tasting profile
The colour is a brilliant, vivid ruby with purple highlights and fine intensity. The nose is immediately beguiling in its finesse and complexity: a bouquet of red and dark forest fruits, wild raspberry, morello cherry, blackberry, touched by a hint of fresh mushroom and a delicate floral note recalling the terroir's kinship with Chassagne-Montrachet. The oak, fine and perfectly integrated after 18 months of ageing, lends structure without ever masking the fruit. On the palate, elegance and finesse reign with quiet authority: the attack is supple and precise, the tannins silky and wonderfully delicate, the result of a gentle extraction with rare punch-downs and frequent pump-overs, and the mid-palate, full of fruit, unfolds with natural ease and harmony. The finish is long, spiced and gently mineral, with a return of florals and fruit that marks the finest expressions of Beauregard. A Premier Cru to decant before serving, accessible now and promising a lovely evolution over six to ten years.
The domaine
The Girardin family has been established in Burgundy since 1570. Justin Girardin, the thirteenth generation, took over the family estate of 17 hectares in 2012 from his father Jacques, brother of the well-known négociant Vincent Girardin. He made the resolute choice of biodynamics: work almost exclusively by hand, mass selection, respect for the lunar calendar, pre-fermentation cold maceration, indigenous yeasts, light filtration and bottling on a favourable lunar day, either a fruit day or during the waning moon. His vision is rigorous and unwavering: to seek, without rest, every possible improvement so that his wines are pure representations of their terroir, vintage after vintage.
Food pairings
This Santenay 1er Cru Beauregard pairs beautifully with a beef fillet with wild mushrooms, roast veal with morels, a farmhouse chicken with cream and truffles, a rack of lamb with herbs, or feathered game such as roast quail. It will also find a lovely harmony with semi-aged pressed cheeses such as a young Comté, a Cîteaux or a Reblochon. Decanting for 30 minutes is recommended. Served between 16 and 17 °C, it will reveal all the finesse and elegance of a Santenay Premier Cru crafted with the passion and precision of a thirteenth generation.
