A precise and well-balanced Chardonnay from Mikulski, fresh, digestible and approachable.
The Bourgogne Côte d'Or Blanc 2024 from Domaine François Mikulski is the ideal and most accessible entry point into the world of one of the Côte de Beaune's most admired estates, a bottle that, as those who know it say beautifully, plays in the big league without the price tag. From two Chardonnay parcels just beyond Meursault, farmed with rigorous organic methods, this wine embodies perfectly the philosophy of François Mikulski and his son-in-law Thomas Boccon: authenticity, purity and elegance in every glass, regardless of appellation.
Terroir and vineyard
The two parcels behind this Bourgogne Côte d'Or are planted with 100% Chardonnay across 3 hectares total, one from 1986 and the other from 2005, both situated just at the boundary of the celebrated Meursault appellation, an administrative frontier that tells nothing of soil quality. The subsoil comprises fine river alluvium, common in the lower part of Meursault's slope, ensuring good water retention and natural root freshness. This soil profile, softer and more clayey than the limestone of Premier Cru sites, gives the wine remarkable roundness, natural richness and length on the palate for a regional appellation, characteristics inherited directly from its immediate Meursault surroundings. The vines are farmed in natural organic agriculture, uncertified, with home-made composts, ploughing, environmentally respectful phytosanitary products and strict maintenance of soil biological balance. Yields are controlled at 45–50 hl/ha for whites, well below legal maxima. After pneumatic pressing and rigorous settling, fermentation proceeds with indigenous yeasts, followed by ten months' ageing in oak with a modest proportion of new wood, then two months in tank before bottling, a minimalist approach letting terroir speak fully.
Tasting profile
The colour is pale gold with luminous green reflections, brilliant and of fine depth. The nose shows remarkable complexity for a regional Burgundy: aromas of Conference pear, Reinette apple and white peach mingle with notes of dried fruits, citrus, green lemon, grapefruit and yuzu, spring flowers, lemongrass and a delicate touch of butter and brioche. Fresh coriander, verbena and acacia honey enrich this complex and luminous palette. On the palate, the caress impresses from the attack: silky and generous, the substance is ample and fruity, with density and natural richness evoking Meursault's immediate neighbourhood. The acidity is fresh, precise and well-integrated, bringing tension and directness to the whole. The finish is long, spiced and slightly peppery, with a persistence and purity that far exceed the wine's appellation rank. A refined Burgundy, pure and direct in style, the consistent hallmark of the domaine.
The domaine
François Mikulski founded his domaine in Meursault with his wife Marie-Pierre in 1991, with the first vintage in 1992. Son of a Polish lieutenant of the Free French, Mieczyslaw Mikulski, who escaped occupied Poland in 1939 to join the Free French Forces in England where he met his future Burgundian wife, he has built over thirty years one of the Côte de Beaune's most respected and sought-after estates, universally recognised for its Meursault in four Premier Cru sites, Genevrières, Charmes, Poruzots and Goutte d'Or. Today his son-in-law Thomas Boccon leads the domaine alongside him with the same rigour and conviction. As François Mikulski himself likes to say: "A good wine is a wine that is drunk." A philosophy that says everything about the man, far from fashion and speculation, guided by authenticity and wine purity, which must reveal with elegance and tension the identity of each terroir, whatever its rank.
Food pairings
This Bourgogne Côte d'Or Blanc pairs beautifully with scallops in supreme sauce, gravlax salmon with fresh herbs, cep and parmesan risotto, fresh pasta with chive cream or small roasted chickens with tarragon and peas. It is also delicious with soft cheese platters such as Brie de Meaux or Brillat-Savarin. Served between 10 and 12 °C, it will reveal all the precision, freshness and purity of a Burgundy Chardonnay of rare elegance for its rank.
