White flowers, citrus and a light buttery note. Fresh and mineral, a fine Côte de Beaune white from Drouhin.
The Côte de Beaune Blanc 2023 from Maison Joseph Drouhin is a particularly precious cuvée within the range, sourced largely from the domaine itself and young vines from the celebrated Clos des Mouches. A true delight, beautifully harmonious. An introduction to the great whites of Beaune signed by one of Burgundy's most respected and consistent houses, in a vintage that Drouhin himself describes as exceptional.

The terroir and 2023 vintage

The soil is clay-limestone. This lighter soil allows the wines to develop great finesse. 2023 stands as one of Burgundy's warmest years, surpassing even 2022. The grapes were harvested at perfect maturity. The wines are highly aromatic with notes of yellow fruits and flowers. On the palate they are generous and full-bodied. They combine generosity, freshness and finesse, with a climate that enhances the terroirs without overwhelming them. 2023, like 2022, should bring considerable pleasure. Vinification begins with slow pressing of whole bunches in a pneumatic press. The juice from the final pressing is separated from the free-run juice. The whites pass into cask immediately after clarification. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation, then ageing, take place in oak casks, with 10 to 15 per cent new oak. The wines from the Côte d'Or were brought in with excellent maturity levels, good sugar-acid balance and satisfactory health. We took advantage of the excellent condition of the grapes to use indigenous yeasts during the alcoholic fermentations.

Tasting profile

The colour is pale gold, very bright. The aromas recall honey, almond and lemongrass, developing with age into intense flavours of hazelnut and roasted almond. The wines are highly aromatic with notes of yellow fruits and flowers. On the palate they are generous and full-bodied. The generosity of the 2023 vintage shows in the glass with immediate directness, a broad and well-nourished texture, carried by the natural acidity of the Côte de Beaune's clay-limestone soils which brings freshness and tension to a generous whole. The touch of Clos des Mouches, one of the most renowned parcels of Beaune, imparts to the wine a complexity and depth that far exceed its rank. The finish is long, fruity and lightly toasted, with pleasant persistence that confirms the quality of the blend and the vintage.

The house

Maison Joseph Drouhin is a family house, now led by the fourth generation, which cultivates 73 hectares of vines spread across exceptional terroirs. Committed for more than two decades to environmentally responsible viticulture, the house favours a biodynamic and organic approach. Organic cultivation has been practised since 1990, then biodynamic some years later. Soils are nourished with compost made from manure and white wood, worked mechanically or by horses. Treatments use only products authorised in organic agriculture. Throughout ageing, decisions are guided by weekly tastings, barrel by barrel, with constant objective: finesse, expression of terroir and respect for the vintage.

Food and wine pairings

This Côte de Beaune Blanc pairs beautifully with scallops in chive cream, grilled fish with beurre blanc, sole meunière, risotto with wild mushrooms and parmesan, farmhouse poultry in cream or langoustine gratin. It will also find fine harmony with soft cheeses such as Chaource or aged Brie de Meaux. Served between 11 and 13 °C, it will reveal all the fruity generosity and natural finesse of a Chardonnay from the Côte de Beaune signed by one of Burgundy's most rigorous houses.
