A vibrant tribute to the vines inherited from her grandmother.
The Montagny Reconnaissance 2023 from Domaine Aline Beauné is the most personal and history-laden cuvée of the domaine. Its name is not that of a lieu-dit: it is a tribute. Reconnaissance, as a gesture of gratitude that Aline Beauné expresses towards her mother, who began with a tiny parcel of 0.35 hectares adjoining the house of her grandmother, at the origin of all the family's vineyard heritage. A cuvée of emotion as much as terroir, hailed with five stars by Jasper Morris MW, one of the greatest specialists of Burgundy.

The parcel and ageing

The Reconnaissance cuvée comes from this historic family parcel, located in the heart of the village of Montagny, on clay-limestone and marly soils characteristic of the Côte Chalonnaise. What radically distinguishes this cuvée from all the others from the domaine is its ageing: Aline Beauné made the journey herself to fetch a century-old Alsatian barrel, a 1,500-litre oak vat over 90 years old, which she brought back and installed in her cellars hewn into the stone ramparts of Montagny. It is in this unique vessel, with no input of new wood, that the wine completes its entire ageing. The Alsatian barrel, by virtue of its size and age, imparts no woody taste but offers slow and gentle micro-oxygenation that gives the wine an unctuousness, roundness and depth that neither stainless steel nor traditional barrels can reproduce. A singular meeting between a Burgundian terroir and an Alsatian vessel, each with its own story to tell.

Tasting profile

The colour is pale yellow with golden reflections, slightly deeper than a village wine, brilliant and limpid. The nose is elegant and racy, showing aromas of citrus, candied lemon, grapefruit zest, associated with notes of white flowers, fresh almond and fine, taut minerality. On the palate, the wine is ample, silky and harmonious, with a round and generous texture nourished by the barrel ageing, traversed by a fine line of acidity that brings freshness and straightness. The tannins are non-existent, the texture is of great softness, and the long and persistent finish leaves an impression of restrained elegance and rare finesse. A Burgundian Chardonnay that is both gourmand and subtle, accessible from today and promised to fine development over three to five years.

The domaine

Aline Beauné founded her domaine in 2018 at Montagny-lès-Buxy, after 13 years of experience managing the winemaking of a respected domaine on the Côte de Beaune. When the cooperative cellar contract for the 5.5 hectares of family vines ended, she seized the opportunity to create her own domaine, with the ambition of producing wines of very high quality from the terroirs of Montagny and the Côte Chalonnaise. Committed to converting to organic farming, she has eliminated herbicides and chemical treatments, and incorporates biodynamic preparations to invigorate the soils. Each cuvée from the domaine embodies a precise vision of terroir, carried by a winemaker whose talent is now recognised well beyond the borders of the Côte Chalonnaise.

Food and wine pairings

This Montagny Reconnaissance will pair beautifully with pan-fried scallops with tarragon butter, sole fillet with chives cream, blanquette de veau in the old style, asparagus and Parmesan risotto or farmyard poultry roasted with herbs. It will also find fine harmony with hard cheeses such as Comté aged 18 months or Cîteaux. Served between 10 and 12 °C, it will reveal all the softness and depth of its unique ageing.
