Fresh and mineral with white stone fruits and citrus, this Montagny from Domaine Aline Beauné is precise, well-balanced and genuinely appealing.
The Montagny 2024 from Domaine Aline Beauné is the domaine's flagship village cuvée and one of the most convincing introductions to the work of a winemaker whose wines Jancis Robinson MW has praised for their perfume, crystalline structure and absolute precision. Rated 91/100 by the Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France 2026, this organic Chardonnay shines through its accuracy and ageing, bright and balanced, a magnificent Burgundy wine that pairs easily with food.
Terroir and the vines
This Montagny village comes from two complementary parcels on the slopes of Saint-Vallerin: Les Rougeriaux, at the top of the appellation on marly soils, and a second lower parcel on clay-limestone. This duality of terroir is precisely what gives the cuvée its complexity and balance: Les Rougeriaux brings mineral tension and the natural freshness of high-altitude marly soils, while the lower parcel contributes the roundness, generosity and texture that well-drained clay-limestone naturally gives to Chardonnay. Montagny is the southernmost of the great white appellations of the Côte Chalonnaise and the only one entirely devoted to Chardonnay, on limestone and marly soils that give it a freshness and minerality quite distinct from the more northerly Meursault and Puligny. The vineyard is farmed in organic conversion with some biodynamic practices, without herbicides or chemical treatments. Ageing is precise and restrained, with a blend of stainless steel and old barrels to preserve the freshness and fruit typical of this Chardonnay terroir.
Tasting profile
The colour is a pale yellow with green glints, limpid and bright. The nose is fresh and expressive, showing white and yellow stone fruits, pear, peach and citrus, underscored by a light floral note and fine limestone minerality. On the palate, the Chardonnay expresses itself with fine openness and natural tension well integrated. The texture is silky and light, with fresh and precise acidity that brings momentum and length to delicate, well-balanced fruit. Lightly buttery and toasted notes from the ageing gradually enrich the palate without ever masking the fruit. The finish is clean, lemony and mineral, with a pleasant persistence that confirms the quality of the terroir and the precision of winemaking. An approachable white from today and capable of fine evolution over three to five years.
The domaine
Aline Beauné founded her domaine in 2018 at Montagny-lès-Buxy, after fifteen years leading winemaking at Château de la Crée in Santenay. A graduate in oenology from Dijon, she immediately began organic conversion and some biodynamic practices to revitalise the soils. On 5.5 hectares carefully tended between Saint-Vallerin and Montagny, she produces wines of a consistency and precision that quickly impressed Jancis Robinson MW, who marks her out as a winemaker to watch absolutely.
Food pairings
This Montagny will pair beautifully with moules marinières, steamed scallops, grilled fish with lemon, trout with almonds, poultry in light cream, asparagus risotto or a plate of fresh goat cheeses. Served between 10 and 12°C, it will reveal all the mineral freshness and natural gourmandise of a Montagny Chardonnay signed by one of the most promising and precise winemakers of the Côte Chalonnaise.
