White fruits, citrus and deep minerality. A structured and elegant Premier Cru from Montagny, crafted by Aline Beauné.
The Montagny 1er Cru Chazelle 2024 from Domaine Aline Beauné is the flagship cuvée of this discreet and demanding domaine, compared by Jancis Robinson MW to a Puligny-Montrachet for its perfume, crystalline structure and absolute precision. A fine organic white Burgundy that unfolds with notes of yellow and white fruits, lightly toasted and buttery notes, and a beautifully rounded, generous finish. Rated 93/100 by the Guide des Meilleurs Vins de France 2026. The Chazelle, in Aline's own words, is about succulence, whereas her other Premier Cru, Le Clou, is firmer and more racey.
Terroir and the vineyard
The name itself tells part of the story: Chazelle is a diminutive of the Old French word Case, meaning house. This climat sits near the main road that traces the Roman way to Cluny, a mid-slope Premier Cru with a full eastern exposure, on a 15% gradient, with argilo-calcareous soil leaning toward marl, scattered with small stones on the surface and naturally well-drained. This geological composition is precisely what gives Chazelle its succulent, floral and saline character, setting it apart from all its neighbours. Aline Beauné has farmed these organic vineyards since 2018, converting to full organic certification from the first vintage, with some biodynamic practices to enliven the soils. Before seizing this family opportunity at Montagny, she spent fifteen years leading vinification at Château de la Crée in Santenay. In the cellar, ageing is precise: 75% in oak barrels with only 15% new wood in the final blend, 25% in tank, yielding subtle and well-integrated oak that lets the terroir express itself fully. Everything is vinified in constant balance between freshness, minerality and generosity.
Tasting profile
The robe is pale yellow with greenish reflections, clear and bright. The nose opens onto delicate floral aromas, notably rose, and exotic fruits, papaya and ripe lemon, with a light, well-managed reductive note that adds further complexity. Pleasant ageing notes of hazelnut and fresh butter gradually enrich this bouquet with remarkable depth and precision for an appellation still too little known. The palate is delicate, fresh and well-built, carried by lively, well-integrated natural acidity. The structure is elegant, with flavours of peach and orchard fruits of beautiful precision, well-melded ageing notes and a remarkable saline finish. This saline and persistent finish is the absolute signature of Chazelle's terroir, speaking frankly to the nobility of this Premier Cru from the Côte Chalonnaise.
The domaine
Aline Beauné founded her domaine in 2018 at Montagny-lès-Buxy after fifteen years leading vinification at Château de la Crée in Santenay. A graduate in oenology from Dijon, she immediately committed to organic conversion and some biodynamic practices to enliven the soils. On 5.5 hectares carefully tended between Saint-Vallerin and Montagny, she produces wines of remarkable consistency and precision that quickly impressed Jancis Robinson MW, who has named her an absolutely essential producer to watch.
Food pairings
This Montagny 1er Cru Chazelle pairs beautifully with roasted lobster, sole meunière, Thai salad, seared foie gras with creamy artichoke or Bresse chicken suprême. It will also find harmony with scallops in chive cream, roasted turbot with beurre blanc or asparagus and parmesan risotto. Served at 12°C, it will reveal the full floral succulence, natural salinity and crystalline precision of a Premier Cru from Montagny signed by one of the Côte Chalonnaise's most promising winemakers.
