Fruity and mineral with white stone fruits and citrus, this precise and approachable Montagny Les Reculerons 2025 from Château de Chamilly is fresh, supple, and deeply satisfying. A Chardonnay shaped by flint-rich limestone, aged in concrete to preserve its crystalline purity.
The Montagny Les Reculerons 2025 from Château de Chamilly is a taut, mineral Chardonnay born from calcaires à chailles, those flint-rich soils that give it a striking gunflint smokiness. Montagny, an understated appellation of the Côte Chalonnaise, deserves far greater recognition. This is a wine of precision, mouth-watering acidity, finesse, and fruit, aged entirely in concrete.
Terroir and vineyard
The climat Les Reculerons spans 1.09 hectares at 250 to 265 metres altitude, facing south east. The soil is argilo-calcareous, studded with flint, with marl below. The Chardonnay vines are 45 years old, yielding around 8,000 bottles at an average of 55 hl/ha. Grapes are harvested and transported in small-volume containers. Settling occurs 12 to 14 hours after pressing. Fermentation and ageing happen in concrete vats at controlled temperature, on fine lees until the eve of bottling, with no oak whatsoever. A light filtration precedes bottling.
Tasting profile
Pale gold in colour. The nose is floral and expansive, holding a mineral quality alongside gunflint and smoke that intertwines beautifully with exotic fruits and orchard peach. The palate opens with a tense attack, then evolves into a soft, velvety, gracious finish. White hawthorn and acacia flowers mingle with orchard peach in a saline freshness that lingers.
The domaine
Château de Chamilly, built in the 17th century, stands at the northern edge of the Côte Chalonnaise. Owned by the Desfontaine family since the 19th century, it is run by brothers Xavier and Arnaud alongside their mother Véronique, across roughly thirty hectares in Bourgogne, Bouzeron, Montagny, and Mercurey. Each climat is vinified separately, combining organic farming with biodynamic practice.
Food pairing
Serve this Montagny with scallop carpaccio and truffle, sea bass simply grilled with fennel, pan-seared prawns with coriander, shellfish, or a dry goat cheese. Best enjoyed at 10 to 12°C, it will reward you over the next five years.
