Depth of fruit married with spice and seduction, from Domaine Mikulski.
The Volnay 1er Cru Santenots du Milieu 2022 from Domaine Mikulski stands among the most precious and sought-after red wines from this intimate domaine, one that collectors treasure and critics unanimously rank among the great names of the Côte de Beaune. Born from two family parcels planted in 1947 and 1976 respectively, with annual production of just 4,000 bottles, this Premier Cru embodies all that Volnay does at its finest: finesse, depth, precise fruit and taut minerality, in a pure, crystalline style that leaves the palate breathless.
The terroir of Santenots du Milieu
Santenots du Milieu represents the finest section of the great Santenots climat, a singular geographical position in Burgundy's landscape. Physically situated on the commune of Meursault, it is classified as Volnay Premier Cru when planted with Pinot Noir, an administrative anomaly that speaks to the geological richness of this border zone. The terroir comprises a brown layer of horizontal silts some thirty centimetres deep, resting on fissured bedrock, a remarkable soil profile that delivers two decisive advantages: excellent water retention as silts infiltrate the rock fissures, and deep root development that feeds the vines with rare minerality and tension. This fissured subsoil, combined with the midslope position and perfect eastern exposure, gives the wine a structure, depth and ageing potential that distinguishes it clearly from the lighter, more floral Volnay of the appellation's north. A terroir that echoes Pommard's power while retaining Volnay's characteristic floral elegance and refinement.
Tasting profile
The colour is a luminous ruby-purple of fine intensity and brilliance, deep and radiant. The nose, initially somewhat closed, opens with aeration into a bouquet of great complexity: aromas of morello cherry, blueberry and blueberry jam mingle with notes of fresh raspberry, violet and peony that become increasingly expressive with air contact. Subtle, metallic minerality, between pencil lead and steel, emerges gradually, along with touches of delicately smoked meat, tobacco and gentle spices. The attack on the palate is silky and precise, the fruit matter rich and nourishing, supported by firm yet refined tannins that promise impressive ageing. Coarsely ground black pepper, liquorice and charcoal enrich a palate of uncommon depth and persistence. The finish is concentrated, taut and precise, charged with contained energy and a length that confirms this wine's exceptional ageing potential, a minimum of ten to fifteen years.
The domaine
François Mikulski founded his domaine in Meursault with his wife Marie-Pierre in 1991, their first vintage in 1992. A giant of the Côte de Beaune, recognised worldwide for his Meursault from four Premier Crus, Genevrières, Charmes, Poruzots and Goutte d'Or, he excels equally in red, as this Santenots du Milieu demonstrates vintage after vintage. Today, his son-in-law Thomas Boccon conducts the domaine alongside him, continuing with the same care and rigour a path of excellence built over more than thirty years. The ten-hectare vineyard is cultivated in a non-certified organic spirit: compost, ploughing, environmentally respectful plant treatments, and carefully controlled yields of 35 hl/ha maximum for red wines. In the cellar, Pinot Noir is destemmed entirely, fermented in vats for 15 to 17 days with indigenous yeasts, then aged for a minimum of 14 months in oak barrels with 35 percent new wood, followed by a period in vat for refinement. His wines are sought after around the world, their scarcity reflecting nothing but a consistency of quality universally acknowledged.
Food pairings
This Volnay 1er Cru Santenots du Milieu pairs beautifully with jugged hare, roasted quail, braised veal cheek, prime rib with wild mushrooms or duck breast with cherries. It will also find fine harmony with quality aged soft-paste cheeses such as Époisses or Soumaintrain. Decanting for an hour is strongly recommended in its youth. Served between 14 and 16 °C, it will progressively reveal all the depth, breed and purity of one of the Côte de Beaune's greatest red wines.
