Bright red fruits, white pepper and subtle florality. Fresh, supple and direct, a Rioja of character, digestible and deeply pleasurable.
The Rioja Corriente 2021 from Bodega Lanzaga is a wine that begins as a manifesto before it becomes a bottle. Its name pays homage to an unofficial classification used in early twentieth-century Rioja that fascinates Telmo Rodriguez, wines "Corriente" — common, everyday — against "Selecto" wines — selected. A wine neither deceptive nor ostentatious, simple and accessible, representing a region, its culture and its wine. Robert Parker called it "the most typical modern Crianza tasted in ages". A red of pure joy, acclaimed by critics worldwide, proving that the great Telmo Rodriguez works with the same rigour in the lower ranges as at the summit.
Terroir and vineyards
Telmo Rodríguez founded Bodega Lanzaga in 1998 at Lanciego, in the Rioja Alavesa subzone, drawn by the potential of old goblet-trained vines on the foothills of the Sierra de Cantabria. The domaine's 30 hectares are farmed in organic viticulture. The vineyards sit between 500 and 700 metres altitude, planted on clay-limestone soils with outcrops of sandstone and marl typical of the region. This altitude is crucial, conferring natural freshness and acidity that set these wines apart from the heavier plains Riojas. Telmo Rodriguez is a passionate advocate for Spanish wine potential, convinced they deserve a seat at the same table as the finest of Burgundy and Bordeaux. In 2015 he organised the "Club Matador Manifesto", gathering 150 signatures to push the Rioja consortium to allow village and vineyard designations on labels — a decisive victory achieved in 2017. The Corriente is a blend of Tempranillo, Graciano and Garnacha with a handful of white grapes, fermented with indigenous yeasts in concrete, then aged for one year in a mix of concrete, barrique and foudre.
Tasting profile
The colour is a bright, intense red. Fresh, leaning into blackberries and red fruits, with moderate tannins, a hint of spice and a lifted mineral and floral finish. The nose reveals white pepper, raw spices, black cherries and ripe plums. On the palate, the wine offers a soft texture with abundant dark and red fruits accompanied by saline minerals and herbaceous accents. A crisp, persistent and flavourful palate — a red from Rioja full of joy, to echo the enthusiastic words of Vinous. Aged 12 months in different types of oak, this is a more primary expression of Rioja, with a slightly crisp finish. A juicy, vibrant wine with a persistent finish showing earthy, redcurrant and cherry notes that make you want to return to it.
The domaine
Since 1998, Telmo Rodriguez has been a decisive voice in Rioja for terroir promotion, both in the vineyard and within the denomination. His 30-hectare organically-farmed domaine in the village of Lanciego is considered by insiders as one of the most promising in all of Rioja Alavesa. The Corriente is, in a sense, the policy statement of this committed vintner, demonstrating that everyday wine can possess character, identity and terroir truth without pretension or ostentation.
Food pairings
This Rioja Corriente will pair beautifully with Basque pintxos, herb-grilled lamb cutlets, Iberian pork skewers, wood-fired pizza, roast chicken with garlic and paprika, or a board of aged cheeses such as semi-aged Manchego or smoked Idiazábal. Its natural freshness and drinkability make it an ideal companion for everyday meals and lively gatherings. Served between 15 and 16 °C, it will reveal all the crisp character and joy of a great Rioja without ceremony, signed by one of Spain's most talented and committed vignerons.
