A bright and generous Barbera, carried by red fruits and a fresh, thirst-quenching finish.
The Barbera d'Alba 2025 from G.D. Vajra is one of the most exhilarating and accessible cuvées from this great Piedmont family house — a wine that embodies with generous and disarming frankness the soul of the Barbera variety, elevated by altitude and the care of a domaine that founded organic viticulture in Piedmont. Juicy, vibrant and of remarkable immediate drinkability, this Barbera d'Alba proves that great vignerons bring the same rigour to every level of their range.

Terroir and vineyards

G.D. Vajra is a family cellar founded in 1971 by Aldo Vajra in Vergne, in the western part of Barolo commune — one of the highest positions in Piedmont's wine country, between 350 and 420 metres altitude. This elevated situation is crucial to understanding the particular character of the domaine's wines: the natural freshness, lively acidity and aromatic tension that distinguish them from plain vineyard production are directly linked to this rooting in the heights of Piedmont's Langa. This Barbera d'Alba comes principally from the family's oldest Barbera vines — vines planted by Aldo Vajra's great-grandfather in 1949, whose naturally low yields concentrate aromatic expression and give the wine a depth and complexity well above its rank. Because of the vineyard's altitude and the thickness of the variety's skin, Barbera ripens very slowly at Vajra and is the last to be harvested — a particularity that translates in the glass as natural freshness, aromatic precision and tension that are the absolute signature of the domaine. Aldo Vajra was among the very first Piedmont vignerons to adopt organic farming, from 1971 when he was still a university student — fifty years before the trend became universal. The domaine is certified organic and has worked for decades on preserving vineyard soils and biodiversity through natural cover crops and wild vegetation. Vinification is precise and minimalist: fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel, long and delicate maceration, ageing mainly in stainless steel to preserve fruit purity and brightness.

Tasting profile

The colour is an intense, bright ruby, sparkling in the glass with fine colour depth. The nose is immediately expressive and generous: aromas of ripe cherry, blackberry and blueberry impose themselves with clarity, accompanied by notes of violet, fresh plum and hay, lifted by a spicy note of tobacco and a subtle balsamc hint. Minerality glides through in the background with discretion and elegance. On the palate, the entry is juicy and vibrant — the absolute characteristic of the Barbera variety — with refreshing acidity well integrated that brings momentum, clarity and a digestible drinkability uncommon among Piedmont red wines. The palate is warm and soft, the tannins fine-grained and silky, and the persistent finish unfolds with notes of wild berries and gentle spices with a length and mentholated freshness that immediately invites the next sip. A digestible, energetic red of great frankness — to drink with pleasure in its youth or keep for three to five years.

The domaine

G.D. Vajra is one of Piedmont's absolute reference houses, founded by Aldo Vajra and today run by his children Milena, Giuseppe and Isidoro — the third generation of a family whose pioneering vision in organic viticulture and terroir respect has influenced generations of Italian vignerons. Over 40 hectares of altitude vineyards, the house produces a range of exemplary consistency and regularity — Barolo, Barbaresco, Dolcetto, Riesling and Freisa, wines that each express with absolute precision the identity of a unique Piedmont terroir. Barbera d'Alba is the everyday wine of the Vajra family — the one you open without ceremony, the one that brings everyone round the table.

Food pairings

This Barbera d'Alba will pair beautifully with fresh egg pasta in veal ragù, lasagne al forno, a herb-grilled pork cutlet, chicken cacciatore with olives and tomatoes, a filled pizza or characterful Italian charcuterie — bresaola, coppa, Piedmont salami. It will also find fine harmony with pressed-curd cheeses like a young Comté or aged Grana Padano. Served between 15 and 17 °C, lightly chilled, it will reveal all its fruited generosity and natural liveliness — in the direct and convivial spirit that is the signature of this cuvée.
