An assembly of at least 20 years, noble and honeyed. Francis Darroze's only blended cuvée, revealing the full scope of the house's mastery.
Bas-Armagnac Grand Assemblage 20 Ans from Francis Darroze is the only cuvée the house permits itself to blend, and precisely this makes it the most representative and instructive expression of Darroze's style as a whole. Where the Unique Collection isolates each domaine and vintage in its absolute singularity, the Grand Assemblage brings together the finest distillates in an exercise of precision and balance that speaks volumes about the house's savoir-faire and vision. A Bas-Armagnac of immediate accessibility and generosity, crafted to seduce both the curious amateur and the demanding connoisseur.

Blending and ageing

The Grand Assemblage 20 Ans is a selection and blend of distillates from different domaines of Bas-Armagnac, all aged a minimum of twenty years in the cellars of Darroze in Saint-Gaudens. Each component comes from properties in the Bas-Armagnac zone selected by Francis and then Marc Darroze with the same rigour as the Unique Collection range: traditional grape varieties, Folle Blanche, Baco and Colombard, distilled in the continuous Armagnac still, the only distillates that can claim the Armagnac appellation in its full purity. Twenty years minimum ageing in Gascon black oak, the oak of Monlezun, gives the blend the depth, complexity and natural roundness that are the signature of this stage of evolution: long enough for rancio to establish itself and tertiary aromas of candied fruit and spice to build fully, yet not so extended that primary fruit aromas disappear entirely behind the oxidative power of great ageing. The art of blending here is that of a conductor uniting different voices into a coherence and harmony greater than each alone.

Tasting profile

The colour is a luminous mahogany with amber and gold highlights, vivid and shimmering, with good density that announces the richness and generosity of the blend. The nose is immediately seductive and accessible, remarkable in its aromatic generosity and directness: notes of candied Agen prunes, dried apricots, Corinth raisins and fresh figs open spontaneously and warmly, accompanied by vanilla, salted butter caramel, café au lait and soft cocoa. The rancio is well present and clearly defined, adding depth and complexity without ever dominating. Spiced notes of cinnamon, clove, nutmeg and aged wood gradually enrich this bouquet with remarkable warmth and depth for a blend of such generosity and accessibility. On the palate, the texture is silky with immediate natural richness, carried by an alcohol warmth perfectly integrated into an ample, enveloping substance. The blend of complementary distillates produces a complexity and harmony on the palate that no single domaine could achieve alone: each component contributes precisely, the Folle Blanche its floral fineness, the Baco its roundness and fruity depth, the Colombard its freshness and vivacity. The finish is long, spiced and persistent, with the return of candied prunes, coffee and rancio unfolding harmoniously over a beautiful saline length.

The house

Francis Darroze founded his selection and ageing house in Saint-Gaudens in the Gers in 1974, with the sole vocation of revealing the identity of great Bas-Armagnac terroirs through their vintage distillates, without compromise or blending. The Grand Assemblage is the exception that proves the rule: a demonstration of the house's blending talent, executed with the same rigour and precision as the Unique Collection range, and for many enthusiasts the ideal gateway into the Darroze universe before discovering the parcel-specific vintages. Today, his son Marc perpetuates this philosophy with the same demands and conviction, placing Darroze among the very summit of the world Armagnac hierarchy.

Tasting and pairings

This Grand Assemblage 20 Ans is best enjoyed neat, at room temperature, in a tulip glass gently warmed in the palm of the hand, left ten minutes in air to allow the aromas to fully unfold. A few drops of very pure water can be added to broaden the aromatic palette and reveal more of the fruity and spiced complexity. It will pair beautifully with dark chocolate with dried fruit, some soft Agen prunes, a fine cigar, an aged Comté of 36 months or a mature Roquefort. This is an armagnac of immediate pleasure and real generosity, to be enjoyed without ceremony yet with all the attention it deserves, and to be offered to enthusiasts not yet acquainted with the greatness of Bas-Armagnac from the reference house of the genre.
