A fine Morey-Saint-Denis, binding finesse, depth and precision. From Domaine Lécheneaut.
The Morey-Saint-Denis 2023 from Domaine Lécheneaut is one of the domaine's most compelling and faithful cuvées — a village Pinot Noir that concentrates in a single glass everything Morey-Saint-Denis does best: that fascinating duality between the structured power of Gevrey-Chambertin to the north and the floral finesse of Chambolle-Musigny to the south, which gives the village's wines a character at once fleshy and elegant, unmistakable to those who know it. Born from a precise and thoughtful blend of four complementary parcels with distinct personalities, this wine embodies the domaine's philosophy in its clarity: classically Burgundian wines, with good density but without excess, and a frank expression of terroir.

The terroir and parcels

This Morey-Saint-Denis village results from a careful blend of four lieux-dits within the commune, each contributing precisely to the complexity of the whole: Les Pierres Virants, which represents roughly 80% of the cuvée and forms its heart; En Seuvrey, Les Cognées and Les Porroux, which complete the palette. Les Pierres Virants — the name evoking the rolling, schistose stones of the slope — sits in the northern part of Morey-Saint-Denis, on a steep and well-exposed site, renowned for producing light and spirited wines of genuine originality. Soils vary slightly across the parcels, ranging from brown limestone to calcareous clay mixed with marl and gravel, a pedological profile typical of the Côte de Nuits that brings both structure and minerality. The diversity of parcels, with soils ranging from limestone to calcareous-clay, ensures the complexity and balanced character of the final cuvée. The average age of the vines is around 38 years. The grapes are partially vinified as whole bunches — a practice adopted by Philippe and Vincent Lécheneaut to bring freshness, tension and a subtle spice and floral touch. Indigenous yeasts guide fermentation, and ageing in high-forest oak casks, renewed at roughly 20% new wood, brings complexity without ever dominating the wines.

Tasting profile

The colour is a deep carmine with violet reflections, bright and richly hued. The nose is expressive and complex, in the domaine's classical and precise style: aromas of red and black fruits — blackcurrant, blueberry, cherry — open with frankness and generosity, accompanied by a discrete floral note, lightly spiced notes and a saline, chalky minerality that marks the imprint of the terroir's calcareous soils. With time, the bouquet will reveal more refined notes of truffle, moss and undergrowth, characteristic of the evolution of great Morey-Saint-Denis. On the palate, the wine is at once fleshy and elegant, in the fine balance that is the domaine's signature: the attack is ample and fruity, the tannins are silky and well-integrated, the substance is generous and of great precision, and the finish is mineral, saline and persistent, with a length that invites waiting a few more years of cellaring to appreciate its full depth. A wine of pleasure and character, accessible from now and capable of beautiful evolution over six to eight years.

The domaine

Domaine Lécheneaut was founded in the 1950s by Fernand Lécheneaut, a native Moreysien settled in Nuits-Saint-Georges. In 1986, his sons Philippe and Vincent took over the domaine, expanded it to 10 hectares across 18 appellations and modernised its facilities with a clear and consistent vision: viticultural practices that respect natural balance, low yields, rigorous selection in the vineyard and precise winemaking that combines tradition and technique to faithfully reveal the character of each terroir. Since 2017, the third generation embodied by Jules Lécheneaut has joined the domaine, ensuring the continuity of an exemplary family legacy. With fewer than 60,000 bottles produced per vintage spread across 18 Côte de Nuits appellations, Domaine Lécheneaut remains one of the most reliable and financially accessible benchmarks of the Côte de Nuits.

Food and wine pairings

This Morey-Saint-Denis will pair beautifully with a fine roasted beef with wild mushrooms, saddle of venison with wild berries, pheasant en cocotte, braised beef with onions or rabbit with chanterelles. It will also find lovely harmony with aged cheeses such as Camembert au Calvados, Époisses or Cîteaux. Served between 15 and 17 °C, with light decanting recommended in its youth, it will reveal all the fruited finesse and saline minerality of a classic great Morey-Saint-Denis.
