Red and dark fruits, floral and lightly spiced. A precise and mineral Morey signed by Cyprien Arlaud, elegant with fine delicacy.
The Morey-Saint-Denis Clos Solon 2023 from Cyprien Arlaud is a village cuvée of remarkable complexity and sincerity, which expresses with precision and elegance the singular character of a terroir from the smallest appellation on the Côte de Nuits. This Morey is a marvel of complexity and elegance in perfectly balanced form. Fine persistence over beautifully expressive fruit. A cuvée that reveals all the typicity of one of Burgundy's most mythical terroirs, while retaining great elegance within this appellation.
The Clos Solon terroir
Morey-Saint-Denis Clos Solon is crafted from two parcels located on the climates En Sevrey and Clos Solon. Two terroirs of great quality situated in the smallest appellation of the Côte de Nuits. The vines have been farmed according to biodynamic principles since 2009, which has brought the wine greater finesse and digestibility. The first parcel, En Sevrey, lies in close proximity to the Premiers Crus of Morey-Saint-Denis, whilst the other, Clos Solon, borders the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation. This geographical duality is precisely what gives the wine its particular complexity and balance. En Sevrey brings the floral finesse and chalky minerality characteristic of Morey-Saint-Denis, whilst Clos Solon contributes the structure, depth and spice more commonly associated with Gevrey-Chambertin. On the nose, the wine unfolds its depth and the complexity of the two Morey climates. Notes of dark fruits, liquorice, cedar and beautiful touches of tobacco develop with elegance. Ageing lasts 14 to 18 months in oak, with air-exposure racking during the ageing period. 25% new barrels. Bottled at Domaine Arlaud without fining or filtration, following the rhythms of the moon.
Tasting profile
Its bouquet is superb, very classy with a framework of dark fruits and spice. Wild strawberry, blackcurrant, blackberry and blood orange notes are identifiable. The palate is balanced, tenderly accompanied by a supple and discreet tannin structure. The finish is nicely structured, enhanced by a mineral dimension from the chalky terroir. The tasting reveals all the complexity and elegance of this wine, unmistakably the house signature. The wine persists long on fruity notes and silky tannin structure. Cyprien and Bertille Arlaud deliver Pinot Noirs of singular vibrancy, whose precision and purity fascinate. Straight, intense wines born of rigorous biodynamic work. A Morey-Saint-Denis village of depth and typicity that far exceeds its rank, approachable now and capable of fine evolution over six to ten years.
The domaine
Cyprien Arlaud represents the third generation of Domaine Arlaud, founded in 1942 from the meeting of Burgundian Renée Amiot and Ardéchois Joseph Arlaud. In 2013, Cyprien took over from his father Hervé and has run the domaine biodynamically since 2009, becoming the first Biodyvin-certified domaine in Morey-Saint-Denis in 2014. Aided in the vineyards by his sister Bertille, who founded a horse-ploughing company, he produces wines of precision and purity that quickly won over the international press and collectors. Since 2012, his passion for Burgundian terroirs in their diversity has led him to develop a négociant activity under the Cyprien Arlaud label, for which his team farms the vines from pruning to harvest with the same biodynamic rigour as the family domaine.
Food and wine pairings
This Morey-Saint-Denis Clos Solon pairs beautifully with roast beef with wild mushrooms, duck with cherries, risotto with porcini and parmesan, rack of lamb with herbs or roasted farmyard fowl. It will also find beautiful harmony with aged cheeses such as Époisses or Cîteaux. Served between 15 and 17 °C, with 30 minutes of decanting advised, it will reveal all the complexity, vibrancy and typicity of a Morey-Saint-Denis village vinified with conviction and talent.
