Red and dark fruits with spice and minerality from Maranges. A precise, approachable village wine from Domaine Matrot, with supple tannins and immediate appeal.
The Maranges Vieilles Vignes 2023 from Domaine Matrot is a Pinot Noir full of fruit and character from the southernmost appellation of the Côte de Beaune, at the border of the Côte chalonnaise. A wine of immediate pleasure, fleshy and powerful, with real depth and clarity: intense fruit, generous yet refined tannins, and a nice tension that brings energy to the whole.
Terroir and vineyard
Maranges is the most southern appellation of the Côte de Beaune. Pinot Noir vines planted on steep south-east facing slopes grow on an argilo-calcareous soil with traces of marl. The old vines, at least thirty years old, are managed in uncertified organic farming with hand-picked harvests. The grapes are entirely destemmed, then undergo a cold soak of three to six days. Fermentation lasts twelve to eighteen days with indigenous yeasts, with punchdowns and pumpovers twice daily depending on the vintage. Ageing lasts fifteen months in oak barrels, 10 percent new wood, followed by three months in stainless steel to prepare for bottling.
Tasting profile
The robe is ruby red with violet tinges. The nose is lovely, showing red fruits, raspberry and strawberry, refreshed by rose, with spice and pepper. The palate is ripe and sensual, fleshy yet supple, with fruit that darkens towards wild blackberry and slightly smoky notes. The tannins are supple but present, supported by an acidity that echoes the crisp, fresh quality of dark berries. The finish is clean and peppery.
The domaine
A family domaine since 1835, based in Meursault, Domaine Matrot has been run since 2016 by the sixth generation, Adèle and Elsa Matrot, daughters of Thierry and Pascale. After working with Chardonnay, they have explored the mysteries of Pinot Noir across other Côte de Beaune terroirs, using very little new oak, crafting pure and harmonious reds that embrace a philosophy of balance.
Food pairings
This Maranges pairs well with poultry, grilled or sauced red meats, veal, game, or duck pithiviers. Served around 16°C, with gentle decanting in its youth, it can be enjoyed now or kept until 2030.
