Red fruits, gentle spices, and earthy notes. A precise and accessible Auxey rouge from Domaine Matrot, supple, fresh, and very appealing.
The Auxey Duresses rouge 2023 from Domaine Matrot is a Pinot Noir from an appellation still too rarely found on tables, yet one that truly deserves your attention. A wine that happily marries finesse with rusticity: a bouquet of dark fruits, a tense finish, and textured tannins, powerful in its youth, which unfolds over several years.
Terroir and vineyard
The Auxey Duresses vineyard sits at the threshold of a combe, between Meursault and Monthelie, alongside Meursault's finest lieux dits. The Pinot Noir vines, around thirty years old, grow on a southeast-facing slope on a soil of clay and limestone with traces of marl. They are farmed organically, a practice the domaine has maintained since 2000, with manual harvesting. The grapes are fully destemmed, followed by a cold soak of three to six days at 10°C. Fermentation, lasting twelve to eighteen days, proceeds with indigenous yeasts, with punch-downs or pump-overs twice daily depending on the vintage. Ageing lasts fifteen months on lees in oak barrels with 20% new wood, followed by three months in stainless steel tank to prepare the wine for bottling.
Tasting profile
The colour is a clear yet deep ruby. The nose offers an intense bouquet of dark fruits, blackberry and blackcurrant, with liquorice, leather, blonde tobacco, minty notes, and a hint of redcurrant. On the palate, there is a fine balance between acidity and richness, with a delicate and lengthened tannic structure, textured tannins, and a tense finish, slightly tart. A wine powerful in its youth, whose tannins soften with time.
The domaine
A family domaine since 1835, based in Meursault, Domaine Matrot has been run since 2016 by the sixth generation, Adèle and Elsa Matrot, daughters of Thierry and Pascale, who have preserved the domaine's style while bringing greater finesse, making the wines approachable young without compromising their ageing potential. Renowned for its whites, the domaine also produces very pure and harmonious reds.
Food pairings
Young, this Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with grilled poultry, beef rib, or barbecue, then, after three to five years, with sauced meats, roasted veal, light game, or cheese such as camembert. Served around 16°C, after decanting in its youth, it is drinking well now, with its peak between 2027 and 2032.
