Fresh red fruits, soft spices and delicate floral notes. A precise, digestible Bourgogne from Domaine Matrot, supple, refreshing and very approachable.
The Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2023 from Domaine Matrot offers a refined and elegant take on Burgundy's signature grape, drawn from vines situated in Puligny Montrachet and Meursault. Dominated by notes of fresh, sweet red fruits with a juicy character, soft tannins, and exemplary drinkability, this is precisely what you want from a red Bourgogne.
Terroir and vineyard
The Pinot Noir comes from three parcels, two in Puligny Montrachet and one in Meursault, perched on the upper slopes over the clay-limestone soils typical of Côte de Beaune. The vines average around fifteen years old, managed under non-certified organic agriculture. The harvest is fully destemmed before a cold soak of three to six days at 10°C to draw out the Pinot's perfume. Fermentation, lasting twelve to eighteen days, proceeds with wild yeasts and includes punchdowns or pump-overs twice daily, depending on the vintage. Ageing spans fifteen months on the lees in oak barrels, with 10 per cent new wood, followed by three months in stainless steel ahead of bottling.
Tasting profile
The robe is a bright, clear ruby. The nose unfolds with fresh red fruit aromatics, redcurrant and wild strawberry, accompanied by subtle hints of white pepper and rosewood. A classical expression, restrained rather than exuberant, yet precise and inviting. The palate shows refined gourmandise, with a crisp attack, light structure underpinned by fine, supple tannins, and a lovely freshness that carries those small red fruits through to the finish. A fluid and digestible wine.
The domaine
A family estate since 1835 and based in Meursault, Domaine Matrot has been run since 2016 by the sixth generation, sisters Adèle and Elsa Matrot, daughters of Thierry and Pascale, who have preserved the domaine's style while bringing an added refinement. While celebrated for its whites, it also produces reds of great purity and harmony, striking a balance free from excessive extraction.
Food pairing
This red Bourgogne will pair well with roasted veal chop, poultry, white meats, charcuterie or soft cheeses. Served around 15 to 16°C, it is best enjoyed young and on its fruit over the next three to six years.
