White flowers, citrus and fresh minerality. A precise, digestible Chardonnay from Domaine Matrot, refreshing, balanced and very approachable.
The Bourgogne Chardonnay 2023 from Domaine Matrot is a fresh, pure Chardonnay, crafted with the rigour of a Meursault domaine. It stands among the most remarkable white Burgundies of the vintage, with fruit purity and minerality that echo the Meursault appellation from which it springs, showing taut fruit, a tactile palate and a long, rounded finish.
Terroir and vineyards
This Bourgogne Chardonnay comes principally from Meursault, supplemented by parcels from the Hautes Côtes and Maranges, drawing on estate fruit and a selection of purchased grapes. The vines are tended according to organic agriculture principles, which the domaine has practised for around twenty years, with soil ploughing, organic manuring, careful desuckering and meticulous monitoring of ripeness. Winemaking uses indigenous yeasts from a pied de cuve, with long fermentations at controlled temperatures. Ageing takes place in 228-litre oak barrels, mostly one to five years old, with around 20 percent new wood, yielding integrated oak that allows the fruit to shine.
Tasting profile
The colour is pale yellow with green glints. The nose is fresh, turning on white fruit, green apple, pear and lemon zest, somewhat reserved, with a hint of roasted almond. The palate opens further, displaying lovely citrus freshness, intense and tactile, where the oak is entirely masked by fruit. The finish is long, rounded and mineral.
The domaine
A family domaine since 1835, based in Meursault, Domaine Matrot is now run by the sixth generation, Adèle and Elsa Matrot, daughters of Thierry and Pascale, who have continued their parents' organic orientation. The domaine cultivates Meursault, Puligny Montrachet, Auxey Duresses, Blagny and Volnay in both white and red, pursuing the same quest for precision, freshness and complexity.
Food pairing
This white Burgundy pairs with oysters, grilled prawns, scallops, roast chicken, pasta in cream sauce or soft cheese. Served around 10 to 12 °C, it can be enjoyed now for its fruit, or after a few years of cellaring.
