White flowers, citrus and mineral notes from Saint Romain. A precise, taut altitude white from Domaine Matrot, fresh, direct and deeply pleasant.
The Saint Romain 2023 from Domaine Matrot is a fine tribute from the Matrot sisters to the still-underappreciated terroir of Saint Romain, neighbour to the illustrious Meursault and Pommard. A Chardonnay from stony soil, remarkable in its tension and refreshing menthol notes, this is a white of great finesse, best enjoyed young.
Terroir and vineyard
Saint Romain is a small village overlooking the Côte de Beaune. The domaine's Chardonnay grows on clay-limestone soils with abundant stones, notably at Charmes du Dessus, from where this wine draws its tension and freshness. The vines are around twenty years old, farmed using reasoned viticulture, with soil work and organic matter. Harvest is by hand at full ripeness. Grapes are pressed whole on pneumatic press, with 24 hours settling before débourbage and transfer to barrel. Fermentation, with indigenous yeasts, takes place at controlled temperature, with full malolactic conversion. Ageing lasts roughly twelve months on lees in 228-litre oak barrels, with a proportion of new oak.
Tasting profile
The colour is pale yellow with green glints. The nose shows lovely white flowers, lime blossom and elderflower, with yellow fruits like mirabelle plum and grapefruit zest. The palate is lively and comfortable, with chalky minerality and striking precision, finishing with menthol notes. The finish is elegant, salivating and persistent.
The domaine
A family domaine since 1835, based in Meursault, Domaine Matrot has been run since 2016 by the sixth generation, Adèle and Elsa Matrot, daughters of Thierry and Pascale, who have preserved the domaine's style while bringing added finesse, making the wines approachable young without compromising their ageing potential. The domaine stands among the Côte de Beaune's leading producers, known for balanced, intense whites and pure, harmonious reds.
Food pairing
This Saint Romain pairs well with asparagus, a shellfish platter, oysters and clams, salt cod, sea fish, white meat, goat's cheese or aromatic Mediterranean dishes. Served at 10 to 12°C, it is ready to drink now, young, for its clarity.
