A Pinot Noir of surprising fruit, uncomplex and gourmand, from biodynamic vineyards in the Hautes Côtes de Beaune.
The Hautes Côtes de Beaune Méchant Bertin 2023 from Domaine Henri Richard is a playful and sincere cuvée, bearing in its very name the character of the domaine: one of quiet work and uncompromising standards, preferring to let its wines speak. Crafted in Pinot Noir in the direct, fruity spirit of the Coteaux Bourguignons that built the house's reputation, this red from the Hautes Côtes de Beaune is a wine of immediate pleasure and true terroir, from a domaine certified biodynamic by Demeter since 2018.

The Hautes Côtes de Beaune appellation

The Hautes Côtes de Beaune appellation stretches west of the Côte d'Or, across some thirty kilometres between Beaune and Autun, encompassing 29 villages and more than 800 hectares of vines planted at altitude between 290 and 500 metres. This back-slope vineyard sits alongside the greatest names of Burgundy, Aloxe-Corton, Pommard, Montrachet, without their prices, making it one of the most compelling appellations for lovers of true terroir wines. The soils are composed of marly formations covered with calcareous scree from the Trias, and the climate, cooler than the Côte de Beaune due to altitude, gives the reds a natural freshness and aromatic liveliness that sets them apart. Pinot Noir, the king of grapes, yields wines dominated above all by fruit, lightness and drinkability, qualities that Domaine Henri Richard masters perfectly.

Tasting profile

The colour is a clear, vibrant ruby, brilliant and inviting. The nose is immediately gourmand and expressive, displaying Pinot Noir in all its sincerity: fresh cherry, raspberry, small crisp red fruits, adorned with a light floral touch and a hint of gentle spice. On the palate, the wine is supple, direct and juicy, with silky tannins and fresh acidity that give it nice tension and excellent drinkability. The texture is light and elegant, without over-extraction or oak mask, in the non-interventionist style of the domaine where new wood is virtually absent. The finish is fruity, clean and crisp, with frank and natural aromatic persistence. A red of pleasure and character, to open without ceremony.

The domaine

Domaine Henri Richard is one of those quiet treasures of the Côte de Nuits shared among initiates. Founded by Jean Richard in 1938 at Gevrey-Chambertin, who bought his first vines from writer and historian Gaston Roupnel, the domaine is today run by the fourth generation, Richard and Sarah Bastien, since 2018. A pioneer of organic farming in the Côte de Nuits from 1996, the domaine obtained organic certification in 2005 before moving to biodynamic certification Demeter with the 2018 vintage. Across its 4.5 hectares, the domaine produces Gevrey-Chambertin, Grand Cru Charmes-Chambertin, but also more accessible cuvées in the spirit of everyday terroir, never sacrificing demands for approachability.

Food pairings

This Hautes Côtes de Beaune Méchant Bertin will be wonderful with fine Burgundian charcuterie, jambon persillé, country terrine, roasted chicken with herbs, fresh pasta with wild mushrooms or a platter of soft cheeses. Lightly chilled around 14–15 °C, it will also be perfect as an aperitif wine, in the spirit of an elegant, unpretentious wine of pleasure, faithful to the domaine's soul.
