Red and dark berries, spice and the deep minerality characteristic of Maranges. A structured and precise Premier Cru from Domaine Matrot, with firm tannins and fine length.
The Maranges 1er Cru La Fussière 2023 from Domaine Matrot is a Pinot Noir from the most celebrated climat of the appellation, the largest in Maranges, situated at the southern edge of the Côte de Beaune. A wine of real distinction, with silky dark berry texture guided by firm and elegant tannins, which speaks to the potential of this fine bottle from an underrated appellation that has far more to offer than commonly recognised.
Terroir and the vineyard
La Fussière occupies the southern tip of the Côte de Beaune, on clay-limestone slopes rich in small stones, with full south to south-east exposure. This terroir gives the Pinot Noir balanced ripeness, pronounced structure, lovely freshness and assertive aromatic intensity. The vines are mature, around sixty years old, farmed using non-certified organic methods with hand harvesting. The grapes are completely destemmed before a cold soak and long fermentation using native yeasts. Ageing lasts fifteen months in oak barrels, with restrained use of new wood, followed by three months in stainless steel before bottling.
Tasting profile
The colour is a deep red with violet glints. The nose opens to ripe dark cherry, blackberry, raspberry, notes of black pepper, blond tobacco and dry earth, with subtle spice. The attack on the palate reveals generous substance, carried by ripe, firm and elegant tannins, whose firmness will soften with time. The finish is concentrated, mineral, persistent, with a pleasantly subtle smoky character.
The domaine
A family estate since 1835, based in Meursault, Domaine Matrot has been run since 2016 by the sixth generation, Adèle and Elsa Matrot, daughters of Thierry and Pascale, who have preserved the domaine's style while bringing added finesse, making the wines approachable when young without compromising their ageing potential. Renowned for its whites, the domaine also produces pure and harmonious reds, with very restrained use of new wood.
Food pairing
This Maranges Premier Cru pairs well with roasted Bresse chicken, pink duck breast, veal forestière, venison fillet with chanterelles or aged cheese. Served around 16°C, after decanting, it will drink pleasurably over the coming years, or can be kept for around a decade.
