Ripe white fruits, hazelnut, and the mineral signature of Fuissé. A rich and precise Premier Cru from Domaine Robert-Denogent, ample yet taut.
The Pouilly-Fuissé 1er Cru Vers Cras 2022 from Domaine Robert-Denogent stands among the most ambitious and representative cuvées of this family domaine, one of the Mâconnais's most demanding and rewarding addresses. A wine with genuine ageing potential, yet already speaking eloquently of Pouilly-Fuissé terroir. A gastronomic wine. The rich aromatic palette of this Chardonnay places it among Burgundy's finest white wines.
Terroir and vineyard
The climat Vers Cras is a classified Premier Cru of Pouilly-Fuissé, located on the commune of Fuissé over argilo-calcareous soils whose depth and mineral richness give this cuvée its concentration and complexity. Domaine Robert-Denogent is a family estate in Fuissé, southern Burgundy in the Mâconnais region, now run by Nicolas and Antoine Robert, who continue the family tradition with an artisanal, environmentally conscious approach. The domaine spans 13 hectares of vines aged 50 to 70 years, some over a century old, farmed in organic and biodynamic agriculture. The goal is to let each grape variety and terroir express itself naturally through each cuvée, respecting organic principles. Vinification is deliberately non-interventionist, with minimal added sulfites. Some Chardonnay vines are centenarian. A wine of considerable complexity and depth, shaped by 24 months' ageing in barrel.
Tasting profile
This 100 percent Chardonnay Premier Cru reveals a delicate golden hue. The nose balances white flowers and peppermint aromas in perfect harmony. The palate is generous and flavourful, revealing citrus notes that bring freshness to the whole. The attack shows peppery notes and a faint smoky touch. The palate is fleshy, ample, carried by a freshness evoking citrus. The terroir's definition emerges with great precision. The 24-month barrel ageing adds depth and complexity without masking the purity of the fruit and the mineral character of the terroir. The finish is long, saline, and pleasantly persistent, confirming this cuvée's capacity for ageing.
The domaine
Domaine Robert-Denogent, an iconic figure in the Burgundy landscape, has been expertly guided by Jean-Jacques Robert since 1988, when he took over his grandfather's vines. Today run by Nicolas and Antoine Robert, who carry on the family tradition with an artisanal, environmentally respectful hand. Each parcel of vines, averaging 40 years old, receives individual care tailored to its needs, allowing each to express its character. Ageing is long and gentle. The wines show breeding and personality.
Food pairings
This Pouilly-Fuissé 1er Cru Vers Cras pairs beautifully with seared scallops in brown butter, tarragon-grilled lobster, wild turbot in champagne sauce, Bresse chicken with cream and morels, or white truffle risotto. It also harmonises well with aged hard cheeses such as 18-month Comté or Beaufort d'alpage. Served between 12 and 14 degrees Celsius, with 20 minutes' decanting recommended for younger vintages, it will reveal the full richness, mineral precision, and generosity of a great Pouilly-Fuissé terroir.
