Delicate and fruity with apple, honey, and subtle floral notes. Ichiro's Malt's Japanese single malt, crafted through double distillation, is refined and pure.
Ichiro's Malt Double Distillation is a rare assembly uniting two legendary distilleries, Hanyu and Chichibu, in an expression bottled in 2026 at 46.5%, drawn from a selection of bourbon casks, hogsheads, and puncheons.

A bottle presented by Ichiro Akuto, an emblematic figure in Japanese whisky, assembling distillates from Hanyu, a now-closed distillery revered by collectors, and Chichibu, his distillery founded in 2008 in the artisanal tradition of his family's heritage. Bottled in 2026 at 46.5%, from a selection of bourbon casks, hogsheads, and puncheons. This double distillation honours Ichiro Akuto's family legacy, whose grandfather founded Hanyu distillery, and celebrates the continuity of craftsmanship passed between two generations of Japanese distillation.

Ageing and provenance

Matured in a selection of bourbon casks, hogsheads, and puncheons, this assembly marries the fruity roundness and unique aromatic signature of Hanyu with the floral finesse and artisanal precision characteristic of Chichibu. The diversity of casks employed brings complexity of texture and flavour, from the vanilla and oak notes of bourbon to the fuller roundness of puncheons, while preserving the individual identity of each distillate. Hanyu, closed in 2000 and later dismantled, remains a legend in Japanese whisky through Ichiro Akuto's efforts to rescue its final casks, while Chichibu, founded by this same Ichiro Akuto in 2008, embodies today's artisanal renewal of Japanese whisky.

Tasting profile

On the nose, a fruity roundness of apple and ripe pear mingles with soft vanilla, clear honey, and a whisper of malted grain. Beneath these generous layers, a delicate floral finesse, distinctly Japanese in character, emerges, carried by a light citrus and fresh oak note. A touch of soft spice and woody nuance add further complexity, reflecting the diversity of assembled casks. On the palate, the whisky is round and precise, balancing vanilla sweetness with preserved fruity freshness. The palate reveals notes of pear, light caramel, spice, and a subtle oak note that frames the whole. The finish is of moderate length and delicate, with a final note of fresh fruit and soft oak.

The producer

Ichiro's Malt is the emblematic brand of Venture Whisky, founded by Ichiro Akuto to perpetuate the legacy of his family's Hanyu distillery after its closure. Now one of the most respected figures in Japanese whisky, Ichiro Akuto subsequently founded Chichibu, where he pursues a demanding artisanal approach, blending tradition and innovation in the selection and assembly of casks.

Tasting and pairings

This Ichiro's Malt Double Distillation is best enjoyed neat in a tulip glass at room temperature, to fully appreciate the balance between fruity roundness and woody finesse of the assembly. A few drops of pure water will reveal further floral notes and the complexity of the different casks. It pairs beautifully with fatty fish sushi, delicate Japanese pastry, fresh cheese, or light dried fruits, whose subtlety will answer wonderfully to the refined balance and precision characteristic of this expression.
