Fine red fruits, spice and deep minerality. A rare red from Blagny, at the boundary between Meursault and Puligny, from Chapelle de Blagny.
The Blagny 1er Cru Sous le Dos d'Ane 2023 from Chapelle de Blagny is a bottle of absolute singularity in the Burgundy vineyard, and the exclusive pride of this discreet domaine nestled between Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet. An exclusivity of Chapelle de Blagny, our parcel of around 1 hectare is the only one planted with Pinot Noir in this climat. It produces very appealing red wines, silky and delicate, which emphasise the expression of red fruit aromas, between sour cherries and raspberries depending on the vintage, with slightly spicy notes in the finish.

The terroir and singularity of Sous le Dos d'Ane

From an argilo-calcareous soil with very red earth, rich in ammonite fossils. The Sous le Dos d'Ane premier cru terroir is a particularity of the Côte de Beaune. It is indeed one of the rare superior quality terroirs where Chardonnay and Pinot Noir can coexist. The terroir comprises largely calcareous marls with a fine layer of clay, a combination that always confers a certain spicy character to the wines. Whilst the vast majority of vineyards in this climat are planted with Chardonnay, Chapelle de Blagny possesses the sole Pinot Noir parcel in the entire climat, inherited from its Cistercian tradition. Of Cistercian origin, Blagny is an ancient dependency of Maizière abbey, the smaller sister to Cîteaux. This exclusivity gives the wine an absolute identity and rarity, impossible to reproduce elsewhere in the appellation. Winemaking is careful and restrained: manual harvesting in crates, 100% destemmed, cold pre-fermentative maceration, ageing 12 months in oak barrels with a maximum of 30% new oak then 4 months in stainless steel tank.

Tasting profile

Nose of fine elegance, dominated by red fruit notes (cherry, raspberry) and gently spiced. On the palate, the attack is fresh and velvety, then evolves with roundness and well-present fruity notes; the finish is elegant and alluring. Intense nose, dominated by dark fruits (cherry, blackberry) and spicy, peppery notes. Fresh and fruity attack, then a fruity and spiced evolution. The freshness, precision and clarity marry through the terroir with powerful spices, citrus and pear notes. Good acidity, dense aromas and delicately spiced right through the complex finish. Fresh fruit aromas will gradually assert themselves, then after about a decade evolve into a preserved character while retaining good power. An atypical Pinot Noir, elegant and precise, to drink from 2025 and capable of fine evolution over 12 to 20 years.

The domaine

Former Cistercian property, the domaine has been run since 1811 by the family of Jean-Louis de Montlivault, who passed the helm to his son-in-law Étienne de Bréchard in 2013. The 7 hectares of the property have held High Environmental Value certification since 2015. Hidden on the upper slopes of the Côte d'Or, between the celebrated communes of Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet, this discreet family domaine produces wines of remarkable coherence and sincerity, of which the red Blagny Sous le Dos d'Ane is the most confidential and precious cuvée.

Food and wine pairings

Our favourite pairing: Aubrac beef rib with chanterelles. Also pairs beautifully with game birds and Époisses. Serving temperature: 18 to 20°C. Ideal with pigeon, duck, game birds and meat in reduced sauce.
