Complex and intense alpine herbs with herbal, spicy and minty notes. A rare edition of Chartreuse Verte from the Carthusian monks, powerful, deep and built for decades of ageing.
Chartreuse Verte VEP Bottled 2026 from the Carthusian Fathers is the rarest, most precious and most sought-after cuvée of Grande Chartreuse, the absolute expression of a monastic craft transmitted since 1605 and guarded in absolute secrecy by the Carthusian Fathers. VEP stands for Exceptionally Prolonged Ageing: where classic Chartreuse Verte ages for roughly four years, the VEP spends many additional years in century-old oak demi-muids in the cellars of Aiguenoire, at the very heart of the Grande Chartreuse monastery. This long, patient maturation profoundly transforms the character of the liqueur, softening the natural power of 130 plants, melding fresh herbs into an incomparable aromatic harmony, and conferring upon the whole a fullness and silkiness that the classic version only hints at. Each vintage is produced in deliberately very limited quantities, a deliberate choice by the monks who have chosen never to increase production to preserve the balance of their monastic life of prayer and silence. Ancient bottles now trade well above their original price. It is as much a collector's piece as an object for tasting.
The plants, recipe and production
The recipe for Chartreuse is one of the best-kept secrets in the history of distillation. Originally transmitted in 1605 by the Marshal d'Estrées to the Grande Chartreuse monastery in the form of a manuscript of 900 medicinal plants, it is known simultaneously only by two Carthusian monks at a time, whom one might call Brother Benoît and Brother Jean-Jacques. The recipe comprises 130 plants, flowers, roots and barks from around the world, among which one can identify angelica, hyssop, lemon balm, mint, sage, genepy, thyme, rosemary, lavender, cardamom, star anise and 120 other varieties carefully selected according to absolute quality criteria. The VEP is made according to the same processes as classic Chartreuse Verte, but the Carthusian Fathers then select the finest batches for several additional years of ageing in century-old oak demi-muids naturally impregnated with liqueur. Each bottle is numbered, sealed with a cork stopper and wax-sealed, presented in the traditional bottle faithful to the one used in 1840.
Tasting profile
The colour is a deep green with emerald and golden highlights, bright and clear, with a depth and visual richness that testify to the long ageing in century-old casks. The nose is open and deep, with an absolutely remarkable complexity and harmony: aromas of rare alpine herbs, pine resin and fresh mint assert themselves with precision, accompanied by nuances of white pepper, angelica, gentian, cardamom and a subtle touch of candied fruit. The prolonged ageing has worked its magic with a perfection and delicacy that immediately distinguish the VEP from the classic version: fresh herbs have melded into an aromatic harmony of rare depth, without the sometimes sharp character present in standard Chartreuse Verte. On the palate, the attack is frank and vegetal, with a dense, ample and silky texture with masterfully well-integrated warmth despite 54% abv. The essential oils of the 130 alpine plants express themselves successively with striking precision and complexity: peppermint, liquorice, genepy, white pepper and warm spices. The texture is silky, rounder and more melded than the classic version, with a natural richness inherited from years in contact with century-old demi-muids. The finish is of absolute length and persistence: the warmth gradually dissipates, leaving a herbal and slightly minty bouquet that lingers for several minutes in the mouth and memory.
The Carthusian Fathers
Grande Chartreuse, a monastery nestled in the gorges of the Chartreuse Massif at 1,150 metres altitude, near Grenoble, is the head house of the Order of Carthusians founded by Saint Bruno in 1084. The Carthusian Fathers have publicly explained their decision never to increase production: to increase would mean altering the life balance of the monastery, to the detriment of their primary calling of prayer and silence. This principle will not change. Chartreuse is produced at the Voiron distillery, the longest liqueur cellar in the world at 164 metres of casks.
Tasting and pairings
Chartreuse VEP Verte is best enjoyed neat, between 11 and 13°C, in a tulip glass to discover all its flavour and aromatic complexity. It is superb for ending a meal, or paired with an intense dark chocolate dessert whose bitterness dialogues harmoniously with the herbal power of the liqueur. A large ice cube can be added to temper the 54% and reveal more of the complexity of alpine plants. In cocktails, it is the soul of the Last Word, the Bijou or the Champs-Élysées. Above all, it is a liqueur for contemplation, to be shared with those who understand that certain numbered bottles are not drunk. They are experienced.
