A delicate orange liqueur from Clos Saint Joseph with warm, generous character and untreated peel aromas.
The Orange Liqueur L'Écorce du Clos from Clos Saint Joseph is one of the most delicate and indulgent creations of this artisanal Burgundian distillery founded in Meursault, an agrume liqueur of absolute frankness and sincerity that claims loudly its difference from industrial orange liqueurs. Made from untreated orange peel after harvest, the zests undergo alcohol maceration for several weeks, with spices incorporated progressively during maceration to enhance the aromas. An artisanal product, made by hand, that carries the identity and demands of a house that makes no concessions to ease.

Origin and elaboration

The cuvée L'Écorce du Clos is part of Clos Saint Joseph's range of agrume liqueurs—lemon, clementine, orange and pink grapefruit—each expression elaborated according to the same rigorous protocol: untreated agrume peel after harvest, a fundamental quality requirement, since the absence of post-harvest treatment guarantees that the essential oils in the zest are intact, pure and of maximum aromatic intensity. The zests macerate in alcohol for several weeks, with progressive incorporation of spices during maceration to enhance and enrich the aromas, an artisanal technique that allows precise and sensitive dosing of complexity progressively constructed layer by layer, as in a great kitchen recipe. The spirit base is a high-quality neutral grain distillate, clean and neutral, allowing the orange to express itself fully without aromatic competition. Cane sugar is added with precision to bring the roundness and sweetness characteristic of a well-balanced liqueur, without ever weighing down or masking the natural vivacity of the zest.

Tasting profile

The colour is a golden amber with orange glints, brilliant and beautifully warm, the natural colour of orange zests infused in alcohol without artificial colouring. The nose is immediately frank and lively: fresh orange zest asserts itself with intensity and clarity that directly recalls freshly peeled orange, a fragrant freshness that major industrial brands cannot reproduce. Delicate spice notes, cinnamon, clove, perhaps a hint of vanilla, progressively enrich the bouquet, testifying to the progressive incorporation of spices during maceration. On the palate, the attack is round and generous, with beautiful natural richness from the long maceration of zests. Orange expresses itself with frankness and without heaviness, a controlled sweetness that allows room for an elegant subtle bitterness of white pith, characteristic of the finest artisanal orange liqueurs. The finish is fresh, spiced and persistent, with this return of orange zest and sweet spices that invites prolonged tasting.

The distillery

Blandine and Charles-Guillaume Simon took over Clos Saint Joseph in 2014, a very old wine négociant located in Meursault, south of Beaune in Burgundy. They devoted themselves to restoring these premises abandoned for half a century in order to rediscover high-quality spirits. With the addition in 2019 of their own alembic, they now run a true artisanal Burgundian distillery. All Clos Saint Joseph distillates are produced in Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, from renowned terroirs. The distillery carries out all work by hand and as a family, from bottling to labelling. The L'Écorce du Clos range perfectly embodies the spirit of curiosity and artisanal craft of Blandine and Charles-Guillaume Simon, a house that knows how to look beyond the vineyard to explore with talent and precision other expressions of terroir and savoir-faire.

Tasting and pairings

This Orange Liqueur is best enjoyed neat and chilled, at 10–12 °C, in a liqueur glass or on ice. It is the ideal ingredient for an artisanal Margarita, a Cosmopolitan or an author's Sidecar, replacing industrial triple sec with a complexity and sincerity that transform these classic cocktails into aromatic experiences of another dimension. At table, a few drops will elevate an orange soufflé, crêpes Suzette, a dark chocolate mousse with orange zest, or a citrus tart. It will also pair delicately with a cheese board of blue-veined cheeses, whose bitterness will respond harmoniously to the spiced sweetness of the liqueur.
